We would also like to thank the Horton Police Department and Kansas Bureau of Investigation, who were preparing to assist with the search, along with the many people who reached out and offered to help.

We are extremely grateful for the outpouring of support from our neighboring agencies and community members. Thank you to everyone who helped bring this incident to a safe conclusion.

Today, January 9th, 2026, is National Law Enforcement Appreciation Day.

We here at the Sheriff's Office are very proud of our deputies. They do a job that most will not or can not. We as a community ask them to risk themselves, to experience trauma, to assist people having their worst days, while also being stoic. It's a hard sell.

It's days like today...where we see the outpouring of appreciation from our community members, such as the donated donuts, the gifted cookies, the positive posts......
that we are reminded that most of the community, the city, the county, appreciate the efforts of our law enforcement.

Too often, voices get amplified that call for officers and deputies to be harmed, and the positivity gets suppressed.

But not today.

We cannot thank you enough.

6th Annual Shop with the Sheriff – Thank You!

The Atchison County Sheriff’s Office completed our 6th Annual Shop with the Sheriff, an annual community outreach program that supports children and families in need. Our goal is to build long-lasting, positive relationships between youth and law enforcement while celebrating the holiday season.

Because of generous community support, we were able to provide clothes, shoes, and gifts for 21 children, along with holiday meal gift cards from Van Dyke’s Grocery for each family. This is an increase in children from previous years, and would not have been possible without the support of our donors:

Karl Buttron; Scott and Janafer Chartier; Strongs Body Shop; Lights Out; Razorjack Recruiting; Cornerstone Printing; BRT Construction; Lopez de Mexico; Jack Bower; StressCrete; Dan Pickman; Sharon Locke; Carrigan Lumber; Hobbe Charge; L&L Construction; Mr. Gs; Consumer Oil & Propane; Taco John’s; Joe Lienemann; Philip Burke; Courtney Laurie; Travis Wright; Kathy and Rex Hines; Mike Edwards; and Fox Theater.

We would also like to extend a sincere thank you to Walmart for their outstanding support and assistance with this year’s event. Their staff did a fantastic job helping ensure the evening ran smoothly.

Thank you to everyone who helped make this year’s Shop with the Sheriff a success and for supporting children and families in the Atchison community.
Merry Christmas!

The Sheriff's Office has gotten a few reports in the past week or two of a telephone scam going around.

This scam goes like this.....

A person calls from the "US Marshal's Service"
They say you missed federal jury duty.
They say there is a warrant outstanding and you need to pay a bond.
The bond can be paid at your nearest CVS
The caller texts a barcode and you use this bar code to load $500
The caller steals your money.

The caller is NOT from any law enforcement.
There is no such thing as a cash bond from federal court.
The bar code is the bar code from a gift card.

If you legitimately miss any jury duty. WE WILL COME TO YOUR HOUSE. We will NEVER call you on the phone.

If you get these calls, HANG UP and call your local police department or Sheriff's Office.

*Update to scheduled test notification*

We have been made aware that some residents—particularly AT&T and Apple iPhone users—may not have received today’s CodeRED test phone call due to call-screening features on certain devices and carriers.

These features may automatically block, silence, or filter unknown or automated numbers, preventing CodeRED test calls from ringing through to the recipient. This issue does not affect text or email alerts.

We are continuing to look into this and will share updates as we learn more.

📢 CODE RED SYSTEM UPDATE – SERVICE RESTORED
Atchison County’s access to the CodeRED notification system has been successfully restored in the wake of the nationwide cybersecurity incident. Atchison County now has access to the new CodeRED by Crisis24 platform and has been conducting checks to ensure full system functionality. Automated Weather Alerts are still not available, but are expected to be restored soon.

📣 A test notification will be sent to all users today at 4:00 PM.
This test will ensure the system is properly connected and operating as expected. If you need to enroll, update your contact information, or add additional methods of contact, please visit:

The Sheriff's Office is very proud of this program. It has been so very successful in the past and the time is almost on us again.

Families and children are generally nominated by various organizations and non-profits in the community and we try to give those families an amazing Christmas.

We cannot do any of it without donations by our community members. Open up your Venmo app and send a few bucks our way. Every dollar goes to this program and this program alone.

**Important Announcement**
The CodeRED public notification system is currently offline due to a cybersecurity incident that caused damage to the CodeRED platform. At this time, the vendor has not provided a timeline for when the system will be restored. As a result, Atchison County is unable to send notifications through CodeRED until further notice.
During this outage, the County will use the Integrated Public Alert & Warning System (IPAWS) for emergency, life-safety notifications only, if needed. Please note: IPAWS cannot be used for non-emergency or convenience notifications. This system is federally regulated by FEMA and is reserved strictly for urgent public safety messages.
Residents are encouraged to monitor local news outlets, official County/City websites, and official social media pages for updates and information that would normally be distributed through CodeRED.
