We πŸ’š Ms. Ellett!!

Continuing our 2026-27 school-level Teacher/Support Professional of the Year spotlights tonight with a look at the Johnnie Lay Burks Elementary School Teacher of the Year, Jessica Ellett!

Ms. Ellett has spent her entire 18-year career with CCSD and at Burks (formerly Chase Street Elementary), where she teaches first grade, and has 19 years of education experience overall, including student and substitute teaching. She comes from a family of teachers but wanted most to be like her grandmother, who taught kindergarten for 30 years. She spent the first seven years of her career in kindergarten.

β€œI’ve been at Burks so long that it’s become my family,” says Ms. Ellett. β€œMy co-workers are incredible, and I’ve gotten to know so many Burks families so well over the years.”

Outside of the classroom, Ms. Ellett loves to read and is in a book club with other Burks teachers. She also loves plants and animals and has bird and squirrel feeders outside her classroom window. She says of all the subjects, math is her favorite to teach, and she holds a master’s degree in teaching elementary mathematics.

Please join us in congratulating Jessica Ellett, Teacher of the Year! And check back in tomorrow (Monday) morning as we continue with our next round of TOTY-SPOTY spotlights!

Continuing our 2026-27 school-level Teacher/Support Professional of the Year spotlights this afternoon with a look at Megina Davenport, Kindergarten Paraprofessional and Support Professional of the Year at Johnnie Lay Burks Elementary School!

Ms. Davenport has been a proud member of the CCSD team for 18 years and spent the past four at Burks. Overall, she has dedicated 38 years to educational settings and working with children and traces that time back to her work in a summer program called JTPA starting at age 14.

β€œAn experience that influenced me to go into education was, as a small child, growing up in Pauldoe (a former housing community in Athens), next door to a daycare, inspired my love for working with young children, as I enjoyed watching them come and go each day,” Ms. Davenport says. β€œOne of my favorite parts of my job is interacting with students throughout the school day, whether in my classroom, the cafeteria, or the hallways.”

Outside of school, Ms. Davenport loves spending time at the beach, which she says is truly her happy place. She is a proud GiGi/Mama to her twin grandchildren, whom she has cared for since they were a year and a half old.

β€œThey are now 7, and being their GiGi/Mama is one of my greatest joys,” she says.

Please join us in congratulating Megina Davenport, Support Professional of the Year! And check back in later this evening at 7 p.m. for a look at the Burks Teacher of the Year!
