The Athens City Council joined local advocates Monday, Oct. 12, to recognize October as Domestic Violence Awareness Month. Pictured are members of the City Council along with representatives from Breaking Chains, the Henderson County HELP Center, and Hailijana Bloom.

Mayor Aaron Smith read a proclamation recognizing the impact of domestic violence on individuals, families, and the community, while honoring survivors and those who work to help them.

The proclamation highlights the importance of prevention, education, and community partnerships in addressing domestic violence. It also recognizes the work of local organizations which provide assistance and support to those affected by abuse.

Domestic violence affects people of all backgrounds, and its impact can extend far beyond the immediate victims, especially when children are involved.

The City of Athens encourages residents to learn more about domestic violence, support local prevention efforts, and help ensure that those experiencing abuse know assistance is available.

The Texas Division of Emergency Management (TDEM) encourages citizens to report damage to property from the severe weather and flash flooding on Saturday, Oct. 3.

Texans can report damage to homes and businesses using the Individual State of Texas Assessment Tool (iSTAT) damage survey. The information provided in the survey aids emergency management officials in gaining an understanding of damages that have occurred and helps officials determine if the state meets federal requirements for various forms of disaster assistance, as well as identify any immediate resource needs.

The iSTAT damage survey can be filled out in English and Spanish online by visiting
https://damage.tdem.texas.gov/ or by using the attached QR code.
