Hop on the bus and take a ride into Marathon County and through history! The Friends of Wausau Historic Landmarks is hosting their third annual Tour de Marathon County on Saturday 26, 2026.

This year the tour will head west into the county and explore five communities with the assistance of local volunteers. The jam-packed itinerary includes:

Explore the exhibits of the Marathon Heritage Center and head out for a guided tour of downtown Marathon.

Step inside St. Patrick’s in Halder, built in 1906, to admire its beauty, as well as learn about the building and its community.

Join in the celebration of Rozellville’s 145th Anniversary with a guided tour provided by the Stratford Area Historical Society - and of course cake!

Head to the very edge of the county and stop in at the Spencer Area Historical Society for a tour of the town.

Lastly, pay a visit to Athens where the Athens Area Historical Society will lead us on a journey through the history of downtown.

Of course, the bus ride will include some surprises along the way.

The tour begins at the St. Andrew Lutheran Church Parking lot at 150202 County Rd NN. Participants are asked to arrive at 11:45 am to ensure the bus can leave promptly at noon.

Tickets are $55 per person and can be purchased on line at https://www.zeffy.com/en-US/ticketing/tour-de-marathon-county--2026.

More information and all updates about the tour are available online at the Friends of Wausau Historic Landmarks page and website, www.wausauhistoriclandmarks.org.

Contact Christine at [email protected] or 715-212-9922 with any questions about the tour.

Have you seen the new historic photo mural on the east side of the Power Plant Building at 708 Mueller Street in Athens (Home of the new Black Creek Coffee ship and Flowers by Laurie)?

If not, we hope you’ll stop by soon — it is truly something special. This beautiful mural brings together historic images of Athens’ people, businesses, schools, churches, farms, fairs, and landmarks, offering a glimpse into the rich history that helped shape our community.

We are incredibly grateful for the opportunity to collaborate with Tom and Lorene Mueller and the Marathon County Historical Society on this meaningful project.

More than a collection of photographs, this mural is a lasting tribute to the people, businesses, and organizations that helped make Athens what it is today.

We invite everyone to stop by, take a look, and enjoy this wonderful piece of local history.

Athens Area Historical Society had a great open house at the Athens Fire Hall this evening!

Andy Hoeft donated a historical item from Krueger and Busche Meat Market. Coincidentally Doug and Kurt Krueger, descendants of Krueger and Busche Meat Market owner, arrived about two minutes later. They had a great visit.

Seeing community members talking, reminiscing, and sharing stories is the best part of our open houses!

Come visit us Saturday June 6 - from 7:00 - 1:00.
