The Athens-Clarke County Leisure Services Department boasts more than 2,000 acres of parks and miles of trails, as well as an arts center, dance center, historic vaudeville theatre, nature center, greenway, and a zoo. The diversity of the department and its programs have resulted in Leisure Services being awarded the Georgia Recreation and Park Association’s “Agency Award” year after year. Leisure Services staff work to build a more livable community by providing opportunities to learn, to create, and to play in quality parks, programs, and facilities that are valued by citizens.

Last week you double-checked your address... now it’s time to check those birthdays! 🗓️

Why it matters: MyRec uses birthdates to confirm participant age requirements for our classes, camps, and leagues. An incorrect birthdate can cause a unexpected snag right when you're trying to sign up on registration morning.

⚠️ Avoid registration delay by taking two minutes to log in, review birthdates for your whole household, and make sure everyone is good to go!

It’s officially time to get into the holiday spirit! We are now accepting online entry applications for the 2026 Athens-Clarke County Downtown Parade of Lights.

Mark your calendars for Thursday, December 3 at 7:00 p.m. as floats, music, and lights make their way down to City Hall for our annual tree lighting ceremony. This year’s theme is “Holiday Party,” and we’re looking for floats and performance groups ready to compete for some fun awards, including the Mayor’s Award for best overall entry!

Head to www.accgov.com/parade to submit your application. The entry fee is $40 and the deadline to apply is Tuesday, November 3 at 5:00 p.m. sharp - no late entries will be accepted!

Enjoy a refreshing morning outdoors with a good story! We are partnering with the Athens-Clarke County Library for an Audiobook Hike this Saturday, October 17, from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m.

Simply bring your phone or device with your favorite audiobook downloaded, headphones, a water bottle, and comfortable walking shoes. Walk at your own pace along the trail, then stick around after the hike to enjoy free snacks, drinks, and listening recommendations with fellow participants.

Because the location is different for each hike, registration is required online at accgov.com/myrec. Once registered, we will email you the specific meetup address and other day-of details.

Celebrate and reflect with us this Indigenous Peoples' Day! 🌾✨ Whether you’re getting outdoors or taking time to unplug, here is what you need to know about our holiday hours for Monday, October 12th:

All Leisure Services parks, with the exception of Sandy Creek Park, will be OPEN from 11:00 AM to 5:00 PM to enjoy your holiday afternoon outdoors. Sandy Creek Park will be CLOSED that day, per it's standard hours.

Our other department facilities, including: Sandy Creek Nature Center, Lyndon House Arts Center, and all of our community centers will be CLOSED on Monday the 12th. Everything will reopen with regular operating hours on Tuesday, October 13th.

New around here or just discovering everything ACC Leisure Services has to offer? Our online portal, MyRec, is your one-stop shop for all department programs, and creating an account for you and your family is completely free!

Today’s Top Tip: Double-check your address when signing up! 🏠
Entering your address accurately ensures the system recognizes you as an Athens-Clarke County resident. That means you get early access to program registration starting at 10:00 AM on October 31st! If there’s a typo, the system will treat you as an out-of-county resident, delaying your registration until November 2nd.

Happy Work Anniversary to Tamika Drake, Youth Athletics Program Specialist! Today marks five years with the Athens-Clarke County Leisure Services Department.

Tamika’s passion for sports and creating opportunities for youth has been at the heart of her work since joining Leisure Services in 2021. During her time with the department, she has helped introduce new programming including Afterschool Skateboarding, Flag Football, March Madness Night Out on the Town, and the Next Level Basketball Clinic.

Throughout the year, Tamika coordinates youth basketball, soccer, flag football, summer camps, clinics and special events. She also recruits and coordinates coaches and volunteers, manages registration and program logistics, coordinates schedules and facilities, communicates with families, and keeps the many moving pieces of youth programs on track.

Her work has also extended beyond Youth Athletics through community partnerships, special events and department initiatives.

Five years, countless practices and games, new programs and plenty of memories later, we are grateful for all that Tamika brings to Leisure Services and the Athens-Clarke County community.

Happy Work Anniversary to Dance Program Specialist David Holland!

Today marks five years of service with the Athens-Clarke County Leisure Services Department.

Did you know that the Leisure Services Department has a facility completely dedicated to dance? We do and David Holland is the Program Specialist at the East Athens Educational Dance Center.

Ballet slippers, leotards, tap and jazz shoes are his office supplies! David keeps staff and students in step and on “pointe” in a selection of amazing dance programs and summer camps. Students learn a variety of dance styles including ballet, modern, jazz, hip hop, and more!

A HUGE “Thank You!” to David for his service to the Leisure Services Department and the Athens-Clarke County Community!
