Athens Area Habitat for Humanity is expanding its impact through the Bright Homes Energy Initiative solarizing 63 homes at Micah's Creek, reducing energy burden and strengthening families through clean, affordable energy. We're seeking major donors to help us reach our $1.2 million funding goal.

WE ARE TURNING AND BURNING on the "Lydia's Second Home" bungalows at Micah's Creek, which will be followed by construction of single-family homes and tiny homes. During October we're expanding volunteer opportunities, and we will be celebrating a "Solar Barn Raising" on October 24th! Athens Habitat is accepting weekday volunteers through the month of October, 2026, and holding a "solar barn raising" on Oct. 24th.

ON WEDNESDAY, SEPT. 30th, THE ATHENS HABITAT OFFICE will be closing early, at 3:00 PM, so that staff may attend the dedication of a home for our most recent partner family to move in! The affiliate office will re-open at 9:00 AM on Thursday, October 1st.

8 WEEKS, 8 HOMES: In the past 8 weeks, the Athens Habitat crew, together with partners and volunteers, have constructed 8 bungalows on the Micah's Creek site as part of the "Lydia's Second Home" project. With the help of Lydia's Place, these structures will provide stable housing for otherwise homeless young adults accepted into area colleges and universities, forever changing the trajectories of their lives. Working with BuildBlock Insulating Concrete Forms and Thomas Concrete, Inc., the construction process goes incredibly fast, and the homes will be quiet, strong, and extremely energy-efficient.

THANKS TO BETA THETA PI at UGA for raising more than $6,000 for affordable housing in Athens! Their pickleball tourney was a roaring success, and we are deeply grateful to the brothers who organized and ran the event, and to all the teams who participated and the sponsors who helped make it happen. You guys are the best!

IT TAKES NEW SKILLS to build the high-efficiency homes at our Micah's Creek neighborhood site. These BuildBlock Insulating Concrete Forms make constructing a home simpler and quicker in a lot of ways, but precision is required. In the end, folks living in Micah's Creek will have peaceful homes that cost less to heat, cool, and insure thanks to ICF construction. Huge thanks to Classic City of Athens Rotary Club and Rotary Club of Athens, GA, USA for rolling with us on this new adventure!

THE ATHENS HABITAT AFFILIATE OFFICE WILL BE CLOSED on Monday, September 7th, in observation of Labor Day. The office will re-open at 9:00 Tuesday morning.

THE NEXT STEP in constructing our "Lydia's Second Home" bungalows on the Micah's Creek site is performed here by Georgia Pumping Services as a thin layer of concrete is dropped into the gap between layers of rigid insulation in our BuildBlock Insulating Concrete Forms. Provided by Thomas Concrete, Inc., this concrete uses repurposed fly ash to make the product stronger and more durable, so we can use less, while reducing the amount of water required to produce it, sequestering carbon, and keeping the ash out of waste dumps.
