๐บ๐ธ 25 YEARS โ WE WILL NEVER FORGET
Today marks 25 years since September 11, 2001 โ a day that forever changed our nation, our communities, and the fire service.
We pause today to remember the 2,977 lives lost that morning and the countless lives forever changed in the years that followed.
Among those lost were 343 FDNY firefighters who answered the call and went toward unimaginable danger while thousands of others were trying to escape. Alongside them were law enforcement officers, EMS personnel, military members, and ordinary citizens who demonstrated extraordinary courage and selflessness.
For those of us in the fire service, September 11 is more than a moment in history. It represents service, courage, brotherhood, and one of the greatest sacrifices our profession has ever known.
Those firefighters climbed the stairs of the World Trade Center carrying their equipment and doing what firefighters across this country have always done โ going toward those who needed help, regardless of the risk to themselves.
A quarter century has now passed.
Some firefighters serving today remember exactly where they were when the attacks occurred. Others were children, and an entire generation of firefighters serving our communities today had not yet been born.
That makes our responsibility to remember even more important.
We remember those who answered their final alarm.
We remember the families who never got to say goodbye.
We remember the police officers, EMS personnel, dispatchers, military members, and civilians who stepped forward when their country needed them.
And we remember the thousands of responders who worked at Ground Zero in the days and months that followed โ many of whom later became seriously ill or lost their lives because of their service.
Twenty-five years have passed, but their sacrifice has not faded.
As firefighters, we honor them not simply by remembering how they died, but by remembering how they lived โ in service to others.
Today, our department stands alongside fire departments and communities across our nation to honor the fallen, support their families, and ensure that future generations understand what happened that September morning.
25 years later, we still remember.
343 firefighters.
One brotherhood.
A sacrifice we will never forget.
