This coming Monday will mark one full year since the horrors of October 7th. As our hearts break at the thought of the hostages still held and the war still ongoing, we know that there is comfort in coming together as a community. We encourage everyone who is looking for such community to join Jewish Democratic Council of America (JDCA) on Monday at 12:00pm ET as we gather virtually to mourn those whose lives have been lost, pray for the speedy return of the remaining hostages, and discuss the latest developments in the region.

● The Vice President has had a life-long relationship with the American Jewish community. She and the Second Gentleman are proud to observe Jewish traditions and share those traditions with the American people.

o As a young girl growing up in the Bay Area in California, she used the ubiquitous blue and white tzedakah boxes to collect donations on behalf of the Jewish National Fund to plant trees in Israel.

o She has marked a series of firsts: the first mezuzah on the doorpost at the Vice President’s Residence, first Passover Seder at the Residence, and first menorah lighting at the Residence.

● Vice President Harris has been a champion in combating anti-Semitism.

o As district attorney in San Francisco, she prosecuted a man after he attacked and attempted to kidnap Elie Wiesel as a hate crime.

o In the Senate, her first legislative accomplishment was introducing and passing a bipartisan effort to combat antisemitism.

o And at her encouragement the second gentleman has taken a lead role in the fight against antisemitism. Together they supported the development and implementation of the first-ever National Strategy to Counter Antisemitism, which contains over 100 specific, actionable steps to end the scourge of hate and prevent antisemitic attacks.

● Vice President Harris has had an unwavering commitment to the security of Israel throughout her career and stood with Israel after October 7.

o She has always been unequivocal about Israel’s right to defend itself.

o She immediately and repeatedly condemned Hamas’ brutal attack on October 7.

o She has said she will always ensure Israel can defend itself against Iran and Iran-backed terrorist groups.

o She was a critical partner to President Biden as they defended Israel from Iranian attack in April 2024.

o She has recognized the importance of close engagement with the Israeli government, prioritizing joining more than 20 calls between President Biden and Prime Minister Netanyahu since October 7 including the day before her convention acceptance speech. She met with Prime Minister Netanyahu in July 2024 and regularly engages President Herzog.

o She has worked tirelessly to get the hostages released, meeting with the families of American hostages and keeping in close touch with them.

o She has been outspoken on Hamas’ horrific sexual violence on October 7, including hosting an event at the White House to highlight these atrocities.

o She has engaged with regional leaders of Jordan, the UAE, Egypt, Iraq, Qatar, Bahrain and the Palestinian Authority, playing a key role in exercising U.S. leadership in the region towards a ceasefire and hostage deal, and planning for the day-after, to ensure Israel’s long-term security.
