The Atlanta Police Leadership Institute (APLI) strives to be a frontrunner in law enforcement by providing a curriculum of structured leadership for current and future supervisors. The goal of this program is to demonstrate the Atlanta Police Department's core values through education and training. APLI serves to enhance the development of personnel through a rigorous tiered curriculum that aims to cultivate transformational leaders and create a culture of excellence. APLI strives to create a culture within the police department in which both leaders and the organization can succeed by setting and achieving strategic goals and maintaining professional standards.

🤝 Two Cities. Shared Purpose. Stronger Leadership.

The Atlanta Police Leadership Institute’s Tier IV participants traveled to Austin, Texas, October 11–14 for a domestic exchange with the Austin Police Department.

From observing large-event operations at the Austin City Limits Music Festival to exploring emergency communications, technology, and community engagement strategies, participants gained valuable perspectives to bring back to the Atlanta Police Department.

This exchange created opportunities to share best practices, build professional relationships, and explore new approaches to serving our communities.

APLI LEADERSHIP IN MOTION! 
Tier II + Tier IV had a FULL week, and leadership was happening everywhere! 

IN THE COMMUNITY
Leadership also means SERVICE! Our APLI leaders rolled up their sleeves and volunteered to help prepare for this Friday’s Senior Ball. From packing gift bags to getting everything ready for our seniors, they showed that no act of service is too small when it comes to making someone feel valued and celebrated. 

TIER IV TAKES ON RON CLARK ACADEMY!
Tier IV had the opportunity to experience the incredible energy of the Ron Clark Academy—and yes, stepping inside felt a little like entering the world of Harry Potter!

But beyond the excitement, creativity, and unforgettable atmosphere was an even bigger leadership lesson.

Our leaders watched students demonstrate accountability, teamwork, encouragement, confidence, and responsibility in the classroom. Students held themselves and one another accountable while still creating an environment where their classmates could succeed.

That left us thinking… 

What if we brought that same level of accountability, encouragement, energy, and ownership into every team we lead?

This is APLI. Learning. Serving. Growing. Leading.

Otters represent many of the qualities we strive to develop in strong public safety leaders. They are collaborative, adaptable, resilient, protective, community-minded, and stronger when working together.
Great leadership isn't about doing everything alone. It is about building relationships, supporting your team, adapting when circumstances change, remaining steady under pressure, and understanding the importance of community.

🤟 LEADERSHIP SPEAKS EVERY LANGUAGE! 💙

The Atlanta Police Leadership Institute (APLI) is proud to partner with Angela Bowers and the Mayor’s Office to provide American Sign Language (ASL) training for our officers!

Effective leadership begins with the ability to communicate, understand, and connect with the people we serve. This training provides officers with valuable tools to better engage with members of Atlanta’s Deaf and Hard of Hearing community—especially during situations where clear communication can make a critical difference.

For APLI, leadership development goes beyond the classroom. It means preparing public safety professionals to lead with empathy, awareness, adaptability, and respect.

Every new skill strengthens our ability to serve.
Every connection helps build trust.
And every effort toward inclusion makes our community stronger.

APLI IS ON THE MOVE!
Community is EVERYTHING, and leadership is about creating opportunities to connect, serve, and make an impact!
The Atlanta Police Leadership Institute (APLI) continues to bridge gaps by bringing leadership beyond the classroom and into the community. Through collaboration with APD internal departments, community partners, and outside agencies—including Emory Police and Dispatch and Henry County E911, our leaders are building relationships and creating meaningful opportunities to serve.
From teaming up with APD CSD connecting with the Nature Gurlz, to preparing meals for those in need, attending City Council town halls, and engaging with our youth at Lit Fest and more—APLI is showing that leadership is not just something we talk about. It’s something we DO!
We’re learning. We’re serving. We’re collaborating. We’re building stronger connections.

APLI Tier II – Week Two is Well Underway!
Our future leaders are being challenged to think, lead, and make decisions from a Sergeant’s perspective. We are equipping them with the knowledge, skills, and tools to add to their leadership tool belts—preparing them to become better, braver, and more confident leaders.
Building stronger leaders today for a stronger APD tomorrow!

APLI Tier II | Accelerated Leadership Academy
APLI Tier II is a three-week leadership development course designed for officers who are preparing for increased leadership responsibilities, including those who aspire to promote to the rank of Sergeant.
Week One is officially complete!

These sessions are designed to help officers strengthen their decision-making, communication, accountability, and leadership skills as they prepare to take the next step in their careers.
As Tier II continues, participants will build upon these fundamentals through additional leadership development, practical discussions, and opportunities to apply what they are learning.
