Atlanta is mourning the loss of Hassan Jihad Ibn Kariem, 42, a beloved Atlanta Public Schools worker who died Monday after a fall from the Goliath roller coaster at Six Flags Over Georgia.

Mr. Kariem spent more than 12 years at Wesley International Academy, where he served as IT manager, technology teacher, and robotics coach. His school community remembers him as deeply loved and respected, and says his impact will be felt by students, staff, and everyone whose lives he touched.

The Cobb County Police Department and the state’s Office of the Commissioner of Insurance and Safety Fire are investigating. Several others were injured, and Six Flags has temporarily closed similar rides across its parks as a precaution.

Our thoughts are with Mr. Kariem’s family, friends, and the Wesley International Academy community during this difficult time.

Happy Indigenous Peoples’ Day! šŸŒŽ

Today we honor the Indigenous peoples of Georgia, past and present, and recognize the three state-recognized tribes that call this state home:

• Georgia Tribe of Eastern Cherokee: Descendants of Cherokee families who avoided the 1838 Trail of Removal by hiding in the North Georgia mountains or blending into local communities. Their territory today covers 31 counties north of the Chattahoochee River.

• Lower Muskogee Creek Tribe: A remnant group of the original Muskogee Creek Confederacy. They maintain a self-determined tribal government at the historic Tama Tribal Town and work to preserve their culture and improve community health and education.

• Cherokee of Georgia Tribal Council: Recognized by the state on March 1, 1988, this nonprofit represents about 400 members dedicated to preserving Cherokee heritage in Georgia.

Their histories, cultures, and communities are part of Georgia’s story, and they are still here, leading and shaping our communities today. šŸ’›

Take a moment to learn more about these tribes, support Indigenous-led organizations, and share this post with someone who should know their names.

Our hearts are with Vienna, Georgia. šŸ–¤

Early Sunday, gunfire erupted at a large homecoming weekend gathering in Vienna, a small town in Dooly County. Two people were killed, 21-year-old Jaquevion Jackson of Cordele and 23-year-old Macaleb Jackson of Hawkinsville. Nearly three dozen others were injured, ranging in age from 14 to 51. Some were in critical condition.

More than 1,000 people had gathered, many of them young people celebrating after a Friday night football win. The event was not school-sponsored, and investigators are still working to determine what happened.

We are holding the victims, their families, the injured, and the entire Dooly County community in our thoughts. No one should have to fear for their life at a homecoming celebration.

This is the second mass shooting involving young people in central Georgia in two weeks. Our communities deserve safety, and the work to end gun violence cannot wait.

Got thoughts on where Georgia is heading? Same. šŸ‘

The Impact Circle is where creators, community voices, and everyday influencers connect.Ā

Whether you’re the person in your group chat who always knows what’s happening locally, or you just want to get sharper on the issues shaping our state, The Impact Circle is where we pull back the curtain.

We’re skipping the formal panels and dense policy speak for a real, interactive conversation with guest speakers who know these topics inside and out. You’ll get to chop it up directly with them and dive into two major issues shaping Georgia right now: Data Centers and The PSC (Public Service Commission)

You don’t need to be a policy expert or a social media influencer to join. You just need to care about your community, want the real facts, and be ready to talk about how we move the needle together.

Grab a drink, hop on Zoom on Oct. 15 at 6 PM, and let’s break down what’s actually happening. šŸ“²

RSVP by heading to the link in our bio!

Nolan Wells should still be here.

Nolan Wells was the victim of a racist murder, and we refuse to accept the official story.

Nolan was a graduate of Ocean Springs High School and a wide receiver at Southwest Mississippi Community College. He went to Horn Island with friends, and two days later, his body was pulled from the water.

They told us he drowned. But a private autopsy found no water in his lungs and documented bruising on the back of his head and torso. Even the state’s own autopsy couldn’t determine how he died. Deleted messages. Conflicting findings. A grand jury that saw nothing wrong.

We stand with Nolan’s family. We demand an independent investigation by the U.S. Department of Justice. We will not let his name fade.

Say his name. Share his story. Keep asking questions.

Cobb County Schools, Georgia’s second-largest district, is removing Toni Morrison’s ā€œThe Bluest Eyeā€ from library shelves, reigniting a fight over what belongs on school bookshelves.

Superintendent Chris Ragsdale read an explicit passage aloud at Thursday’s board meeting, arguing parents shouldn’t be blindsided by the book’s content. But library advocates say the district skipped the review process state law lays out, one that’s supposed to start with a parent complaint, not a decision from the top.

Retired librarian Nan Brown says the novel doesn’t meet the legal standard for obscenity and that the scene in question depicts r**e as violence, not anything gratuitous. She’s also raising a bigger question: if policy gets bypassed once, what’s next?

This isn’t the first time Cobb has clashed over school materials, and it mirrors a similar 2022 fight in Forsyth County that ended with the book being reinstated after a federal review.
