Yesterday afternoon, on the first day of the Special Session of the Georgia General Assembly, many Georgia citizens gathered in the State Capitol Rotunda to peacefully protest for the adequate counting of every vote from our midterm election and 15 or so arrests were made. Most of those arrested were protestors, but one notable arrest made was that of GA39 Senator Nikema Williams. The reason in which they were being held is being speculated upon, but generally unknown. Due to the efforts of GA58 Rep. Park Cannon, a press conference was held later in the day in efforts to raise awareness of this alarming event. Senator Williams and one other person were released but to my knowledge, most of these people are still being detained. Some need medical attention. If you feel inclined, call the Fulton County Jail 404-613-2000 asking for these individuals to be released and donate for their bail at http://bit.ly/GA-BailFund18

This year, there was record breaking youth turnout in the 2018 Midterm election. However, the fight for our right to vote didn’t end at the polls. With uncounted absentee and provisional ballots, broken voting machines, and an SOS who just wouldn’t quit, we all have questions about how to make voting truly fair and free. Join the Young Democrats of GSU and the Spelman Chapter of the Young Democrats of America this Wednesday, November 14th at 7pm to voice those concerns. The work we do now will help us in the elections to come.
