Webinar Tuesday, November 15, 2022 - 2022-2023 Seasonal Influenza Testing and Treatment During the COVID-19 Pandemic 11/09/2022

Healthcare professionals, we invite you to join us for our next COCA Call: 2022-2023 Seasonal Influenza Testing and Treatment During the COVID-19 Pandemic

Registration is not required. Free CE.

When: Tuesday, November 15, 2022 / 2:00 PM - 3:00 PM ET

Overview:
The COVID-19 pandemic disrupted influenza activity during the past two seasons. Since October 2022, influenza activity has increased, signaling an early start to the U.S. influenza season. While it is not possible to predict influenza activity or the severity of the upcoming influenza season in the United States, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) is preparing for co-circulation of influenza and SARS-CoV-2 viruses. While annual influenza vaccination remains the best way to prevent influenza, antiviral medications are an essential addition to vaccination—especially in treating outpatients with suspected or confirmed influenza, people at high risk for influenza complications, those with progressive disease, and hospitalized influenza patients. During this COCA Call, the presenter will provide an overview of CDC’s recommendations for healthcare providers about influenza diagnostics and the use of antiviral medications for the 2022-2023 influenza season, including considerations during the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.

OFFICIAL CDC HEALTH ALERT NETWORK (HAN) HEALTH UPDATE #480:
Update on Ebola Virus Disease (Sudan ebolavirus) Outbreak in Central Uganda

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) is issuing this Health Alert Network (HAN) Health Update as a follow-up to a HAN Health Advisory (Outbreak of Ebola virus disease (Sudan ebolavirus) in Central Uganda) issued on October 6, 2022. This Health Update serves to inform public health departments, public health laboratories, and clinicians in the United States about the ongoing outbreak of Ebola virus disease (EVD) in Uganda caused by Sudan virus (species Sudan ebolavirus). No suspect or confirmed EVD cases related to this outbreak have been reported in the United States (U.S.) or other countries outside of Uganda to date. However, as a precaution because of increasing cases in Uganda, CDC is communicating with public health departments, public health laboratories, and healthcare workers in the United States to provide an update and raise awareness of this outbreak and the potential for importation of cases.

OFFICIAL CDC HEALTH ALERT NETWORK (HAN) HEALTH ADVISORY #478:
Outbreaks of Nontuberculous Mycobacteria Infections Highlight the Importance of Maintaining and Monitoring Dental Waterlines
Summary:
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) is issuing this Health Alert Network (HAN) Health Advisory to emphasize the importance of following existing recommendations for maintaining and monitoring dental waterlines. Multiple outbreaks of nontuberculous Mycobacteria (NTM) infections have occurred in children who received pulpotomies in pediatric dental clinics where the dental treatment water contained high levels of bacteria. CDC provides guidelines on infection control in dental settings, which contain recommendations to treat dental unit waterlines and monitor water quality. Dental providers should be familiar with these recommendations on how to properly maintain and monitor their dental equipment to ensure that dental treatment water is safe for patient care.

Healthcare professionals, we invite you to join us for our next COCA Call: Evaluating and Supporting Patients Presenting with Cardiovascular Symptoms Following COVID

Registration is not required. Free CE.

When: Tuesday, September 20, 2022 / 2:00 PM - 3:00 PM ET

During this COCA Call, presenters will discuss post-COVID conditions (PCC), also referred to as Long COVID or post-acute sequelae of SARS-CoV-2 infection. Post-COVID conditions is an umbrella term for the wide range of health consequences that are present four or more weeks after infection with SARS-CoV-2. Of the variety of symptoms that patients with PCC experience, cardiovascular symptoms and complications are among the most common and debilitating. Presenters will also outline the recommended clinical approach to identifying and managing cardiovascular complications in these patients based on the American Academy of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation (AAPM&R) “Multi-Disciplinary Collaborative Consensus Guidance Statement on the Assessment and Treatment of Cardiovascular Complications in PCC”. The burden of PCC is expected to reflect the disproportionate burden of infection by race, ethnicity, and socioeconomic status, and to highlight ongoing inequities in health care healthcare. The AAPM&R Health Equity Work Group has developed guidance to highlight the central role that principles of diversity, equity, and inclusion play in delivering quality health care.

Topic: 2022–2023 Recommendations for Influenza Prevention and Treatment in Children: An Update for Pediatric Providers

When: Thursday, September 15, 2022, 2:00 PM - 3:00 PM ET

Influenza remains a serious threat to children due to its potential to cause severe morbidity and mortality. Vaccination is the most effective way to prevent influenza illness and associated complications, including death. Influenza vaccination remains particularly important during the COVID-19 pandemic when transmission of SARS-Co V-2 and other respiratory viruses can be high. Clinicians play a critical role in taking action to immunize children and their family members and caregivers. During this COCA Call, presenters from the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) will provide an overview of influenza prevention and treatment recommendations for the 2022–2023 season.

OFFICIAL CDC HEALTH ALERT NETWORK (HAN) HEALTH ADVISORY 474: Severe Respiratory Illnesses Associated with Rhinoviruses and/or Enteroviruses Including EV-D68 – Multistate, 2022

Summary: Healthcare providers and hospitals in several regions of the United States notified the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) during August 2022 about increases in pediatric hospitalizations in patients with severe respiratory illness who also tested positive for rhinovirus (RV) and/or enterovirus (EV). RVs and EVs can have clinically similar presentations and are indistinguishable from one another on multiplex assays often used in clinical settings. Upon further typing, some specimens have been positive for enterovirus D68 (EV-D68). Concurrently, pediatric acute respiratory illness sentinel surveillance sites are reporting a higher proportion of EV-D68 positivity in children who are RV/EV positive compared to previous years. Although it primarily causes acute respiratory illness, EV-D68 has been associated with acute flaccid myelitis (AFM), a rare but serious neurologic complication involving limb weakness.
