Good Moring ! It isn’t often that we get visitors to our Board meetings of the Gold Shield Foundation, but this past month we received a very welcome and joyful visit from old friends we supported several years ago.
Deputy Michael Finn of the Rockdale County Sheriff’s Office was on duty directing traffic as part of investigating a traffic accident when he was struck on the interstate by another vehicle. He sustained numerous broken bones in his legs and arms and had to be airlifted for surgery. He was lucky to be alive. Helping to supplement the loss of his second income was vital during his recovery.
Recently, we were contacted by Deputy Finn and his wife Nicole, who wanted to come back to thank the Gold Shield Foundation for helping them when they were in need, and to donate so that others could benefit similarly in the future.
We were overjoyed to receive them and to hear how they battled back from the health and financial consequences of the incident. We are extremely grateful for their generosity in wanting to give back some of what they have been given.

Good Morning the GSF wants to remind you in Honoring Police that selflessly serving their communities! What is National Police Week?
National Police Week occurs every May, and in 2024, we will commemorate it with live, in- person events. The National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial Fund will hold ceremonies, including the 36th Annual Candlelight Vigil, to honor the fallen officers whose names have recently been added to the Memorial.

The 36th Annual Candlelight Vigil will be held on Monday, May 13.

In 1962, President Kennedy proclaimed May 15 as National Peace Officers Memorial Day and the calendar week in which May 15 falls, as National Police Week. Established by a joint resolution of Congress in 1962, National Police Week pays special recognition to those law enforcement officers who have lost their lives in the line of duty for the safety and protection of others.

National Police Week is a collaborative effort of many organizations dedicated to honoring America’s law enforcement community.

Our Story

On October 12, 1997, Atlanta police officer John R. Sowa was killed in the line of duty while responding to a domestic violence call. At that time a small number of service-minded individuals pulled together to aid the Sowa family, and from that act, the inspiration for creating the Gold Shield Foundation of Metro Atlanta was formed.

Today, our mission is to provide care and assistance to police, firefighters, and the families of those seriously injured or killed in the line of duty. The Foundation is a Non-Profit / 501(c)(3) organization.
