I was incredibly honored to be invited to speak at the Decatur Rotary Club today about women’s representation in politics. I was able to give numbers on where we are worldwide (27.5% women in government leadership) and the sobering projection by UN Women that it will take until 2063 until women make up 50% of leadership even though we make up half the world population.
I shared what Her Term is doing not only to recruit women to run for office but keep them there, how we are looking to the long-term durability and resilience of our women. And how it is our civic duty to protect our democracy by making civic engagement more accessible to regular people, to build a system that invites people in rather than shuts them out, to protect those people who are brave enough to step us to serve us. I’m so grateful to be invited and that Colleen Kiernan could be there to give me such a beautiful introduction and Ally Van Houten could give me the support that she gives out candidates each week.

Dear reader, if you found yourself in East Atlanta this weekend, you might have wandered past a modest fence and discovered something rather extraordinary behind it.

Allyson Van Houten, the same steady hand who runs our Monday productivity circles, had thrown open her garden gate. Her Term candidates and volunteers arrived one by one, some clutching blue “Elect Women” fans, all ready to trade campaign season for one uncomplicated afternoon among friends.

And who should make the long drive down from far northern, deep red Whitfield County but Cathy Kott herself, running for the second time and undeterred by the odds. She came not just to join the party, but to capture it. To Cathy, for the whimsy and spirit she caught on film, and to Allyson, for the garden that inspired it: our thanks.

TUESDAY, JUNE 16 — GWINNETT, THIS IS A BIG ONE 🗳️

If you live in Senate District 7 (Duluth, Berkeley Lake, parts of Lawrenceville, Norcross, Peachtree Corners, and Suwanee), your vote on Tuesday matters more than almost any election this year. Here’s why.

Gov. Kemp’s special session on redistricting starts Wednesday, June 17 — the very next day. Lawmakers will be redrawing Georgia’s political maps, and whoever wins Tuesday’s special election runoff will be seated in time to vote on it.

That seat was held by a Democratic woman, Nabilah Parkes, until she stepped down to run for Lt. Governor. Adrienne White Carden is the Democrat fighting to keep it blue — and to make sure Gwinnett has a voice in the room when those maps get drawn. Her opponent is a Republican who would hand the GOP another vote on redistricting and voting rights.

There’s a second race on the same ballot that can feel confusing but is just as important: the Democratic primary runoff to decide who represents this seat starting in 2027. That’s between Ruwa Romman and another Democrat — and Ruwa is the one who can keep a Democratic woman in this seat for the long term.

Yes, you can and should vote for BOTH Adrienne White Carden AND Ruwa Romman on Tuesday. They’re different races, different timelines, same goal: a Gwinnett Democratic woman fighting for our communities.

Early voting ends Friday. Polls Tuesday open 7am–7pm. Find your polling place: mvp.sos.ga.gov

Every vote counts.
