On Friday evening, September 18, 2026, Santos Maria Chilel Soto was walking through a field with her family near Ellendale, Delaware, when she was fatally shot.
According to Delaware State Police, 74-year-old Walter Moorhead was hunting from a ground blind when he fired a rifle at what he believed was a deer.
He struck and killed a human being.
Now, here is where this story takes another disturbing turn.
DELAWAREβS GENERAL FI****MS DEER SEASON WAS NOT OPEN!
September 18 fell during Delawareβs archery and crossbow deer season. The general fi****ms deer season does not open until November 13.
So why was this man sitting in a ground blind with a rifle, shooting at what he believed was a deer? Could it have been a depredation permit hunt? Itβs not addressed anywhere why he was rifle hunting during a non-rifle season.
Was he illegally hunting deer?
Was this a possible poaching incident that ended with an innocent woman losing her life?
Those are questions investigators need to answer. The reported circumstances raise serious concerns about possible hunting violations, but a poaching violation has not been established.
Moorhead has been charged with felony manslaughter and three counts of reckless endangering. The investigation will determine whether additional violations occurred.
Meanwhile, a woman is dead, her family is grieving, and her children have lost their mother.
Her family is reportedly raising money to return her body to Guatemala.
