ITIN holders: before your next federal tax filing, check whether your number is still active.

An ITIN that hasn’t been used on a federal tax return for three consecutive tax years can expire. If yours has expired and you need it to file federal taxes, ask about renewal before you file. Using an expired ITIN may delay processing.

Can’t pay your full tax bill? Don’t let that stop you from filing your return.

For most people with a timely extension, tomorrow is the deadline to file their 2025 federal individual return. If you owe, pay what you can and ask about your payment options. The extension gave you more time to file, but it did not extend the time to pay.
