E-bike riders should stay alert, obey traffic laws, watch for pedestrians, and always wear a helmet. Safe riding habits help everyone share the road responsibly.
This graphic was created by students at Mainland Regional High School through the U Got Brains! Champion Schools Program, a peer-led traffic safety initiative that empowers young people to promote safer communities.
Thank you to these student leaders for helping spread important safety messages across New Jersey.

Keeping our officers informed, confident, and ready to respond is an important part of training at ACPD.

ShotSpotter’s director of training, Don Shumate, recently visited our department to provide a refresher course on the gunfire locator technology ACPD has used for the past 13 years.

During his visit, Don attended all six roll calls and conducted a separate training session for ACPD leadership, giving officers and supervisors an opportunity to learn about updates and ask questions.

Continued training helps our department stay current with the advanced technology we use. Thank you to Don for sharing his expertise and working with our team.

Yesterday, the Atlantic City Police Department honored the life and legacy of Patrolman Peter John “Sonny” Burke, who made the ultimate sacrifice 56 years ago, on October 1, 1970.

A memorial ceremony was held at MLK Boulevard and Atlantic Avenue, near the location where Patrolman Burke was killed in the line of duty.

At approximately 11:45 p.m., Patrolman Burke was flagged down by a business owner regarding two suspicious males near the intersection of Illinois Avenue (now MLK Boulevard) and Atlantic Avenue. As he approached the men, one opened fire with a sawed-off sh***un, fatally wounding him.

Patrolman Burke was among the first officers assigned to the Atlantic City Police Department’s newly established Canine Corps. Alongside his K-9 partner, Thor, he made the first canine arrest in department history. Thor was in the patrol wagon at the time Patrolman Burke was shot.

A U.S. Navy veteran who served during both the Korean and Vietnam wars, Patrolman Burke had served with the Atlantic City Police Department for just 15 months. He was survived by his wife, three brothers, and five sisters.

More than 100 current and former ACPD officers attended the memorial, joined by two of Patrolman Burke’s brothers. Greg Burke spoke in remembrance of his brother, along with Deputy Chief Andrew Leonard and Public Safety Director Sean Riggin.

The Policemen’s Benevolent Association Local 24 presented a wreath in Patrolman Burke’s honor. The Atlantic City Fire Department then placed it at the intersection that now bears his name.

We will never forget Patrolman Peter John “Sonny” Burke, his service, his sacrifice, and the lasting impact he made on the Atlantic City Police Department and the community he served.
