“I’m keeping those medications because I might need them someday!”
Sound familiar? Many of us have a medicine cabinet full of leftover prescriptions just in case.
But here’s why that can be a problem:
* Medications can expire or lose effectiveness. That old prescription may not be the right medication or dose for the next time you feel sick.
* Someone else might find them. Unused medications can be misused by family members (often little ones who like colorful candy), visitors, or others who gain access to them.
* Prevent prescription drug abuse: Many people who misuse prescription painkillers obtain them from family or friends. Proper disposal helps reduce access.
*Leftover prescriptions can be dangerous. Especially pain medications and other controlled substances, which can lead to accidental overdoses or addiction.
* Protect our environment: Flushing medications or throwing them in the trash can contribute to environmental contamination. Public Works will thank you!
The bottom line? If you no longer need it, don't save it for a rainy day. Safely dispose of it!
The Atoka Police Department participates in the DEA Drug Take Back Program to provide a safe, convenient way to dispose of unwanted or expired medications.
Clean out that medicine cabinet. What you no longer need could be exactly what someone else should never get their hands on.
