What will it take to build healthier, more resilient forests in California?
SNC’s Policy & Outreach Division Chief Brittany Covich recently joined a PPIC discussion exploring the science, partnerships, and large-scale strategies needed to address growing wildfire risks across the state.
“California is a fire-prone state,” said Covich. “We have to continue the momentum of the last decade with sustained funding to deal with wildfire at a systemic level. Fire in the Sierra Cascade region is not always a bad thing; historically, fires burned low and slow, clearing out brush and helping forests stay healthy and spaced out. But today, many wildfires burn hotter and more destructively due to overcrowded forests caused by decades of fire suppression. That's where prescribed fire enters the picture... learn more: https://sierranevada.ca.gov/news/regional-updates/wildfire-risk/
