This week weâre pleased to feature Karen Russo!
Karen is a figurative ceramic sculpture operating out of western Oregonâs verdurous foothills. Clay is her primary medium because of its malleability, capacity for transformation, and direct connection to the earth. Each sculpture is hand-built from a solid block of clay, and she carves its surface with designs inspired by rock formations, fossils and shells, seed pods, and plant forms. Stately women in various stages of life emerge from the clay with colors derived from deserts, forests, oceans, or the mountains of the Pacific Northwest.
âI explore the tensions of the feminine experience: strength and contemplation; youth and aging; hope and despair; vulnerability and resiliency. Through these ancestors so evocative of the precious earth from which they were formed, [âŠ] I seek love and compassion, a counterbalance to hate and violence.â
