VRFA staff participated in the Great Shakeout Earthquake Drill earlier today to practice what to do when the ground starts shaking. Being prepared can make all the difference when an earthquake strikes!

Have you practiced with your family? Take a few minutes to review your earthquake safety plan and make sure everyone knows what to do.

Thanks to our CARES team for putting together this demonstration video.

Are You Ready?

Tomorrow, 10/15 at 10:15 AM is the Great ShakeOut, the world’s largest earthquake drill! Drop. Cover. Hold on. The safest place during an earthquake is under a sturdy desk or table. If you’re outside, move to a clear area away from buildings, trees, and power poles.

How to participate and stay safe:

-Drop, Cover, Hold On: Practice this quick safety action.

-Review Your Plan: Go over evacuation routes and family meeting points.

-Stay informed: Follow local emergency updates and tips.

Batteries don’t belong in the trash, especially Lithium-ion batteries!

Assistant Fire Marshal Homan is showing us exactly what not to do with used batteries. When lithium‑ion batteries get crushed or damaged in garbage trucks or at waste facilities, they can spark fire, putting workers, equipment, and entire facilities at risk.

To properly dispose of batteries:
1ļøāƒ£ Do NOT put them in the trash or recycling bins
2ļøāƒ£ Place batteries in a clear plastic bag
3ļøāƒ£ Find a recycling location

Here’s a local option to take batteries:

We use battery powered devices every day, and where you charge them matters! This Fire Prevention Week, take a moment to review your lithium-ion battery safety habits.

We don’t recommend charging your electronics on soft surfaces like beds, couches or blankets. These surfaces can trap heat and increase the risk of overheating and fire.

Instead, charge your devices on a hard, flat surface where heat can safely escape.
