The Auburn Police Department has been awarded $30,327.72 through the FFY27 Municipal Road Safety Grant Program to support traffic safety efforts in our community.

Traffic safety is one of the most common concerns we hear from residents. Whether it’s speeding through neighborhoods, distracted driving, or impaired operation, unsafe decisions behind the wheel put everyone at risk.

This funding will help put additional officers on the street for patrols specifically dedicated to traffic enforcement. These patrols will focus on dangerous driving behaviors, helping us address traffic concerns and prevent crashes while our regularly assigned officers continue responding to calls for service.

Our goal is simple: help make sure everyone gets home safely.

The grant is funded by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration and administered by the Massachusetts Executive Office of Public Safety and Security’s Office of Grants and Research.

We appreciate their continued investment in the safety of our community.

This morning, we officially welcomed Officer Nicholas Tessier to the Auburn Police Department. Officer Tessier joins us from the Spencer Police Department, bringing just over five years of municipal law enforcement experience. Prior to his municipal law enforcement career, he also served with the Worcester State Campus Police Department.

Officer Tessier is a well-rounded officer who has also served on the CEMLEC Crash Reconstruction Team for the past two years. We are excited to have Officer Tessier with us and look forward to working alongside him!

A FAKE NAME, TWO WARRANTS, AND ONE VERY BAD DAY

On Sunday, October 4, at approximately 6:35 a.m., Sgt. Gregg Wildman observed a black Acura exiting the Massachusetts Turnpike onto Southbridge Street at a high rate of speed.

After checking the registration and learning the registered owner's license was suspended, Sgt. Wildman located the Acura on West Street and conducted a traffic stop. The driver was subsequently arrested for operating with a suspended license.

But the traffic stop wasn't over.

The front-seat passenger claimed to have a Maine driver's license and offered to drive. However, he said he didn't have his license with him and provided a name that turned out to be false.

Unfortunately for him, giving a fake name doesn't make your real identity disappear.

Officers identified the passenger as 30-year-old Connor Ferguson of Leicester, who was wanted on an outstanding Massachusetts Parole Board violation warrant.

In 2018, Ferguson was sentenced to state prison after pleading guilty to manslaughter for his involvement in the 2015 shooting death of an 18-year-old man in Worcester.

Officers also learned Ferguson was wanted by the U.S. Marshals Service in connection with a separate, unrelated case originating in Maine.

What began as a routine traffic stop resulted in the apprehension of an individual with a serious violent criminal history who was wanted by multiple authorities.

This is what proactive policing looks like.

This is the work our officers do day in and day out, much of which the public never hears about. Auburn may be a small community, but that doesn't mean our officers are dealing with small-town problems. Our officers encounter individuals with serious criminal histories and outstanding warrants extending well beyond our town.

These situations demand vigilance, sound judgment, and professionalism. Our officers do more than respond to calls. They proactively investigate criminal activity, apprehend wanted individuals, and work every day to keep our community safe.

Excellent work by Sgt. Wildman, Officer Porcaro, and Officer Ortiz.

Sometimes the smallest observations lead to the biggest discoveries.

TWO ARRESTED AFTER STOLEN CHALLENGERS FLEE AUBURN THEN COME BACK

At approximately 3:12 a.m. on Thursday, October 1, Officer Lareau clocked two Dodge Challengers traveling 60 MPH in a 40 MPH zone on Washington Street.

When Officer Lareau attempted to stop them, both took off at speeds well over 100 MPH. Turns out, they weren't late for work. Both Challengers were stolen.

Rather than engage in a dangerous high speed pursuit, Officer Lareau backed off, got on the radio, and let good police work take over.

Neighboring departments kept tabs on the Challengers. One eventually crashed, its driver jumped into the other, and they continued on. Then came the radio transmission that got our attention: They were headed back to Auburn.

Well…if you insist.

Instead of chasing them, our officers got ahead of them. Once the car came back into Auburn, Officer Hemingway deployed stop sticks and successfully deflated the tires. Turns out, the Challenger was considerably less challenging without air in the tires.

The vehicle crashed a short distance later and the occupants ran.

Officer Ljunggren and K9 Biza went to work on the ground while Officer Laskes put our drone in the sky. Auburn officers and Massachusetts State Police established a perimeter.

Biza tracked through the woods and located one individual curled up and hiding behind a Route 20 business. The second individual was located nearby. Both were taken into custody.

18 year old Jaelen Cannon Feraud of Worcester was arrested on multiple charges including Failure to Stop for Police, Negligent Operation, Operating with a Suspended License, Possession of Burglarious Tools, and Receiving a Stolen Motor Vehicle.

A 16-year-old juvenile from Worcester was also arrested and is facing charges.

No unnecessary pursuit. Good communication. Stop sticks. K9 on the ground. Drone in the air. Smart, patient police work.

Outstanding work by Sgt. McLaughlin, Officer Lareau, Officer Hemingway, Officer Montague, Officer Ljunggren and K9 Biza, Officer Laskes, Massachusetts State Police, and our neighboring departments.

Today, our motorcycle unit was joined by members of the CEMLEC Motorcycle Unit from the Leicester, Westborough, and Millbury Police Departments for a coordinated school bus safety patrol.

Motorcycle officers followed buses from the high school along their routes to the elementary schools, keeping a watchful eye for drivers who failed to stop for school buses. This effort was conducted in addition to the traffic and patrol units who follow buses almost daily, pending calls for service of course.

A huge thank you to our motorcycle officers, Detective Chipman and Officer Brooks, as well as our CEMLEC partners, for your time, teamwork, and dedication!

You know what’s always awesome? A major power outage two days before a storm hits. Good news: now everyone knows what they need in case we lose power this weekend!

Yesterday, Thursday, September 24, 2026, at about 6:13 PM, our communications center started receiving multiple calls about a vehicle traveling erratically westbound on Washington Street (Rt. 20) that had already caused damage to at least one other vehicle further up Route 20.

Sergeant Luis Santos was in the area and, without knowing that dispatch had started receiving calls, observed the vehicle driving down the wrong side of the road with sparks flying and a tire missing.

Sergeant Santos immediately attempted to conduct a motor vehicle stop as the vehicle had turned down Prospect Street and then on Southbridge Street (Rt. 12) northbound, but the operator refused to stop and continued driving erratically down Rt. 12.

In fact, the vehicle continued to violate multiple motor vehicle laws and didn’t come to a stop until it struck and severed a telephone pole, taking out power, phone, and cable service to thousands of people. This power outage affected almost the entire town and some of our major roadways, including our traffic lights, businesses, and even our police station.

The operator attempted to flee the crash on foot and ran toward the tree line, with officers giving chase. He was quickly caught, placed under arrest, and identified as Mr. Salvatore Belsito of Auburn.

Mr. Belsito was charged with:
1. Failing to stop for police
2. Operating a motor vehicle with a suspended license
3. Operating an uninsured motor vehicle
4. Operating an unregistered motor vehicle
5. Speeding
6. Leaving the scene of property damage ×2
7. Negligent operation of a motor vehicle
8. Disturbing the peace
9. Resisting arrest

He was arraigned at Worcester District Court today and released.

We are so thankful for the help of Auburn Fire & the Massachusetts State Police at the scene, as well as National Grid, MassDOT, and Charter, for getting everyone up and running! Big shout to our amazing communications team for all of their hard work during the chaos!
