As we wrap up Fire Prevention Week, we want to leave everyone with one final reminder: the small choices we make when charging our devices can make a big difference.

Lithium-ion batteries power many of the things we use every day, from phones and tablets to power tools, e-bikes, scooters and electric vehicles. Using them safely is an important part of preventing fires in our homes.

Here are a few important reminders:

Use the right charger. Use the charger that came with your device or one approved by the manufacturer. Avoid cheap or damaged chargers.

Charge on a hard surface. Keep charging devices off beds, couches, pillows and other soft surfaces where heat can become trapped.

Unplug when fully charged. Don't leave devices charging longer than necessary.

Know the warning signs. If a battery becomes unusually hot, swells, smells strange, smokes, or makes popping or hissing sounds, stop using it.

Charge larger devices safely. E-bikes, scooters and power tools should be charged in appropriate locations and should never be charged where they can block an exit.

Recycle batteries properly. Never put lithium-ion batteries in your regular trash or recycling.

And don't forget the other important lessons we've shared this week: working smoke alarms, a practiced home fire escape plan, and knowing two ways out of every room.

We also want to say THANK YOU to everyone who participated in our Fire Prevention Week activities and followed along with our daily posts and homework. We hope you've learned something useful and, most importantly, had some conversations with your family about staying safe.

Safe charging is a superpower. Use yours.

The department has wrapped up its annual Fire Prevention Week presentations at Owasco Elementary School, William H. Seward Elementary School, Herman Avenue Elementary School,Casey Park Elementary, and Genesee Elementary School !

Our department’s Life Safety Educators along with Dispatchers from Cayuga County 911 had a great time visiting with students, sharing important fire safety lessons, and helping them learn how to stay safe at home and in their communities.

This year’s Fire Prevention Week theme is “Charge into Fire Safety: Safe Charging is a Superpower!” Students learned about the importance of safely charging electronic devices, recognizing potential fire hazards, and making smart decisions to help prevent fires.

We were proud to see how well-behaved, excited, and engaged the students were during our visits. Their enthusiasm and thoughtful questions made these presentations a rewarding experience for our educators.

A special thank-you to the teachers, administrators, and staff at all five schools for welcoming us into your classrooms and helping make fire safety education a priority.

Most importantly, thank you to all the students for being such wonderful participants!

We’ve made it to the final Fire Prevention Week homework assignment!

For our last activity, grab those crayons, colored pencils, or markers and help Sparky bring this Charge Into Fire Safety picture to life.

This week we’ve talked about a lot of important fire safety topics, from smoke alarms and home fire escape plans to lithium-ion batteries, safe charging, hard surfaces, and electrical safety.

As you color, take a few minutes to talk with your family about what you learned this week. Ask the kids:

What is the most important fire safety lesson you learned this week?

And for the grown-ups, here’s one last challenge: Did your family complete all of this week’s homework? If you did, let us know in the comments! We’d love to hear what your family learned.

Thank you for joining the Auburn Fire Department for our Fire Prevention Week homework. We hope these activities started some important conversations at home that continue long after Fire Prevention Week is over.

BUY listed. CHARGE safely. RECYCLE responsibly.

Today we’re shifting our attention to electric vehicle charging safety.

As more electric vehicles become part of our community, it’s important to understand how to charge them safely at home. Today’s safety sheet covers important tips, including:

Use equipment listed by a qualified testing laboratory.
Follow the manufacturer’s instructions.
Check chargers and cords for damage before use.
Never use an extension cord with an EV charger.
Keep charging equipment away from things that can catch fire.
Have a qualified electrician evaluate your electrical system before installing home EV charging equipment.
Use the proper equipment and dedicated circuit for your charging setup.

If you have an electric vehicle, take a few minutes to review the information in today’s safety sheet and make sure your charging setup is being used safely.

Small actions can make a big impact when it comes to fire prevention.

It’s time for Thursday’s Fire Prevention Week homework.

Today’s assignment is a little more fun and a lot more colorful. Have the kids grab their crayons or colored pencils and help Sparky learn an important battery safety lesson:

Charge phones, tablets, and other electronic devices on a hard, flat surface — not on a bed, couch, or other soft surface.

While they’re coloring, take a minute to talk about where everyone in your home charges their devices. Is it on a safe, hard surface? It’s a small change that can make a big difference.

And how did your family do with Wednesday’s homework? Did you check your smoke alarms? Did you find two ways out of each room? Did your family choose a meeting place and talk about your home fire escape plan?

We’d love to hear from you! Let us know in the comments if your family completed Wednesday’s homework and what you discovered.

Keep the homework coming, keep the conversations going, and most importantly, keep your family safe!

Soft surface? Hard pass.

That comfortable spot on the couch or bed might seem like the perfect place to charge your phone, tablet, laptop, or game controller, but it can create a serious fire hazard.

Charging devices and batteries generate heat. Soft surfaces such as beds, couches, pillows, and blankets can trap that heat and prevent proper airflow.

Today's quick reminder:

Charge on a hard, flat surface.
Keep charging devices away from beds, couches, pillows, and other materials that can burn.

It is a small change in your charging routine that can make a big difference in fire safety.

Check out today's safety tip sheet for more information about the lithium-ion batteries we use every day and how to BUY, CHARGE, and RECYCLE them safely.

Small action. Big impact.

Today’s Fire Prevention Week assignment is our biggest one yet — and one of the most important.

Tonight, we want the whole family to take some time to work together on a Home Fire Escape Plan.

Your assignment:

Color and cut out Sparky and take him along on your fire-safety adventure.
Check your smoke alarms. Make sure you have alarms in the proper locations, test them, and check their age.
Walk through every room in your home and identify two ways out.
Complete the home fire escape plan by drawing a map of your home, including doors and windows.
Choose an outside meeting place a safe distance from your home where everyone will meet after escaping.
Practice your plan with everyone in the household.

Remember, a fire can spread quickly, and children may not always wake up when a smoke alarm sounds. Knowing what to do before an emergency happens can make all the difference.

Today’s challenge: Don’t just make a plan — practice it.

Post a photo of your completed escape plan or your family working on the assignment in the comments. We would love to see Auburn families putting their fire-safety skills into action.

LITHIUM-ION BATTERY SAFETY

Lithium-ion batteries are part of our everyday lives. They power our cell phones, laptops, tablets, e-bikes, e-scooters, toys, power tools, smoke alarms, and even some vehicles.

While these batteries are designed to be safe when used properly, damaged, defective, or improperly used batteries can overheat and catch fire.

Here are some important safety reminders:

Use the right battery and charger. Only use batteries and charging equipment designed for your specific device and follow the manufacturer’s instructions.

Charge safely. Never charge a device under a pillow, on a bed, or on a couch. Charge on a hard, flat surface where heat can dissipate.

Know the warning signs. Stop using a battery if you notice an unusual odor, a change in color or shape, swelling, leaking, excessive heat, or unusual noises.

Don’t keep charging after it’s full. Once your device or battery is fully charged, unplug it.

Keep batteries away from things that can burn. Store them in a safe location away from heat and combustible materials.

Dispose of batteries properly. Never put lithium-ion batteries in the trash or recycling bin. Follow local guidelines for proper battery recycling and disposal.

If you see a problem, take it seriously. If a battery begins smoking or catches fire, leave the area, get outside, stay outside, and call 911.

And remember, battery safety doesn't stop at home. When traveling by air, keep devices with lithium-ion batteries where you can see them and never attempt to charge a damaged or malfunctioning device.

Take a look at today's graphic for additional lithium-ion battery safety information.

Safe charging is a superpower.

FIRE PREVENTION WEEK HOMEWORK: COLORING ACTIVITY

It’s time for another Fire Prevention Week homework assignment!

Today’s activity is a little different. Grab the crayons, colored pencils, or markers and have some fun with this Fire Prevention Week coloring sheet.

While you’re coloring, take a moment to talk with your family about what the picture represents and what you can do to make safe choices every time you plug in.

It may be a simple activity, but it’s a great opportunity to start a conversation about battery and charging safety at home.

Print it out, color it in, and show us your Fire Prevention Week masterpiece!
