The Maine State Ferry Service is proud to have the M/V Charles Norman Shay in operation between Rockland and Matinicus. The vessel's namesake was a member of the Penobscot Nation and Maine veteran who served in World War II and the Korean War as a medic. His bravery on Omaha Beach and lifelong advocacy for Indigenous veterans continues to inspire us. He passed away in December of last year at the age of 101. The ferry is now a daily reminder of his courage and service.

Our contracting partners, Frazier Signal Technologies, are working on the first phase of a traffic signal improvement project around the intersection of North Main Street & State Street in Brewer.

One of the most important parts of this project is happening underground. Crews are boring beneath the roadway to install new utility conduits, allowing the signal infrastructure to be installed without having to cut into the road. This approach helps crews complete the work more efficiently while minimizing impacts to traffic.

We appreciate everyone’s patience as this important improvement moves forward!

Safe, accessible transportation starts with understanding the experiences of the people who use it. Yesterday in Augusta, MaineDOT staff joined Women in Transportation, and several other organizations for hands-on ADA and accessibility training. Guided by accessibility experts and people with lived experience, participants explored how sidewalks, curb ramps, crossings, and other features can affect mobility, safety, and independence. The lessons learned will help inform how we plan, design, build, and maintain a transportation system that works for everyone. Thank you to our partners for making this a success! On World Animal Day, we’re celebrating the wildlife within Maine and the infrastructure that helps keep animals safe! Wildlife crossings and properly placed fencing give animals safer routes across roads while reducing the risk of wildlife-vehicle collisions. These investments protect drivers, support healthy habitat connections, and help wildlife move safely through the landscape.
