Today Maine EMS for Children Program Manager Marc Minkler is at the annual Maine State Maternal-Fetal-Infant Mortality Review Panel (MFIMR) in person Conference. Speakers today include members of the CDC in Atlanta as well as National Fatality Review members from Florida and Wisconsin.

This group of physicians, nurses, EMS, midwives, doulas, epidemiologists, public health officials, people with lived experience and many others meet monthly (virtually) to review all cases in Maine. This review is of maternal deaths during pregnancy and up to a year postpartum, as well as all infant deaths up to 1 year of age.
It is a heavy task but one that aims to improve outcomes and reduce mortality. Many of the recommendations have led to implementation of BLSO, NRP and other classes as well as equipment recommendations.
By statute, we review all patient care info. Your EMS run report for any patient in this group (and all PCRs up to a year prior to the event) is reviewed by this group and helps guide meaningful changes.
