Friday Case Files | Public Assistance Requested

APD’s Friday Case Files highlights open investigations where public assistance could help identify or locate individuals or vehicles. These requests build on ongoing investigative work, and someone with firsthand knowledge may provide the additional lead needed to move a case forward.

On October 16, 2026, Aurora Police received several reports totaling more than $10,000 worth of tools and equipment stolen overnight from a subdivision construction site in the 3200 block of Del Webb Boulevard. A lock had been removed from a storage container, and workers discovered missing property that included power tools, lighting, a canopy tent, and other construction equipment.

Surveillance footage showed a white pickup truck entering the property and leaving approximately 45 minutes later, around 12:06 a.m., with equipment in its bed. Photos of the truck are included with this post.

“These tools and equipment are how people earn a living, and having them stolen can put an entire crew’s work on hold,” said Aurora Police Chief Matt Thomas. “While these images may only offer limited detail, we continue to pursue every available lead. Someone may recognize this truck or know something that helps us take the next step. We’re asking for your help to identify those responsible and recover what was stolen.”

Anyone with information is asked to contact APD’s Investigations Division at 630-256-5500 or [email protected] and reference case AUPR26013547. Please share information directly with investigators rather than posting names or specific details in the comments.

🎃 A little fall cheer and a whole lot of kindness!

Students from Fischer Middle School’s Fischer Cares Builders Club stopped by APD to deliver pumpkins they painted with messages of kindness and appreciation for our officers. The club brings together sixth, seventh, and eighth graders to give back through community service projects in the area.

A group of our officers welcomed the students in the lobby, and even K9 Sadie joined in to say thanks! 🐾💙

Thank you to these thoughtful students and club sponsor Mischelle Sanders for brightening our day and showing how small acts of kindness can make a difference. We appreciate you thinking of us!

Aurora Police Arrest Man on Multiple Felony Drug Charges Following Search Warrant

Aurora, IL – Aurora Police arrested a 33-year-old Aurora man on seven felony drug charges after officers responding to a residential burglary observed suspected illegal drugs in plain view, leading to a search warrant and the recovery of thousands of pills, co***ne, cannabis, and other controlled substances.

On October 14, at approximately 5:14 p.m., Aurora Police responded to the 400 block of South Lincoln Avenue for a reported residential burglary in progress. Witnesses reported seeing two individuals enter the residence and leave with several bags before fleeing in a vehicle.

Upon arrival, officers observed signs of forced entry and conducted a protective sweep of the residence to determine whether anyone remained inside or needed assistance. During that sweep, officers observed a large bag containing suspected cannabis, along with numerous pills, in plain view. Based on those observations, officers secured the residence and contacted investigators with the department's Special Operations Group (SOG), who subsequently obtained a search warrant to further investigate the suspected illegal drug activity.

During the investigation, the resident, identified as Mickey Stewart Jr., 33, of Aurora, returned to the property and was later taken into custody for obstructing a peace officer. Officers also recovered suspected controlled substances from his person.

At approximately 8:50 p.m., SOG investigators executed the search warrant and recovered the following (weights are approximated):

• 1,066.49 grams of suspected cannabis
• 28.05 grams of suspected co***ne
• 15.51 grams of suspected crack co***ne
• 4.27 grams of suspected M**A (Ecstasy)
• 4,886 suspected amphetamine pills (Adderall)
• 76.25 suspected alprazolam pills (Xanax)
• 266.5 assorted pills
• $2,624 in U.S. currency

Investigators also recovered digital scales and packaging materials.

The Kane County State's Attorney's Office reviewed the investigation and approved the following charges against Stewart:

• Manufacture or Delivery of a Controlled Substance – Class X Felony (2 counts)
• Possession of a Controlled Substance – Class 1 Felony (2 counts)
• Manufacture or Delivery of Cannabis – Class 2 Felony (1 count)
• Possession of Cannabis – Class 3 Felony (1 count)
• Possession of a Controlled Substance – Class 4 Felony (1 count)

Stewart remains in custody at the Kane County Adult Justice Center, with his next court date scheduled for October 22.

“This investigation is a good example of how our officers remain alert to criminal activity beyond the initial call for service,” said Aurora Police Chief Matt Thomas. “What began as a response to a reported burglary led to the recovery of a significant quantity of suspected illegal drugs, including thousands of pills. This seizure represents drugs that are no longer available for distribution in our community, and that's an important part of our ongoing efforts to keep Aurora safe.”

The investigation into the reported residential burglary remains ongoing.

Charges are not proof of guilt. The defendant listed in this release is presumed innocent and is entitled to a fair trial, where it is the burden of the State to prove guilt beyond a reasonable doubt.

October 19, 2026 – FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Aurora Police Arrest Man Following Vehicular Hijacking, Recover Stolen Vehicle

The Aurora Police Department arrested an Aurora man and recovered a stolen vehicle following a vehicular hijacking Saturday afternoon. License plate reader technology helped patrol officers, the Critical Incident Intelligence Center (CIIC), and detectives locate the vehicles involved.

On October 17, 2026, at approximately 4:04 p.m., officers responded to the area of South Farnsworth Avenue and Summerlin Drive. Preliminary investigation indicates the victim stopped after another vehicle struck his vehicle from behind. When he exited, one man punched and kicked him in the face, while a second man pushed him. The men then fled in his vehicle and the vehicle they arrived in. The victim later sought treatment at a local hospital and was later released.

While patrol officers interviewed the victim and witnesses, CIIC personnel reviewed license plate reader data and city camera footage, identifying the stolen vehicle traveling with a second vehicle. That review established the second vehicle’s registration, which was associated with a residence in the 500 block of Grand Avenue, where officers located both vehicles.

Officers established a perimeter around the residence, and crisis negotiators and the department’s Special Response Team responded to assist. Thomas Kovach, 24, of Aurora, voluntarily exited and was taken into custody at approximately 8:52 p.m.

Despite repeated efforts over several hours to persuade the second man to exit voluntarily, he remained inside. After detectives obtained a search warrant, the Special Response Team entered and took him into custody without incident at approximately 11:39 p.m., about seven hours after officers first arrived at the residence.

“This technology is an important tool in investigating violent crime,” said Chief Matt Thomas. “In this case, license plate readers helped our CIIC personnel identify the stolen vehicle and a second vehicle traveling with it, providing a lead to their location. That information, combined with patrol officers’ work with the victim and witnesses and detectives’ follow-up investigation, helped recover the vehicle and bring charges. We will continue bringing technology and teamwork together to hold violent offenders accountable and deliver the public safety Aurora deserves.”

Following a review of the investigation, the Kendall County State’s Attorney’s Office authorized the following charges against Kovach:

• Vehicular Hijacking (Class 1 Felony)
• Possession of a Stolen Motor Vehicle (Class 2 Felony)
• Aggravated Battery on a Public Way (Class 3 Felony)
• Mob Action (Class 4 Felony)

Kovach remains in custody at the Kendall County Public Safety Center pending a detention hearing. The second man was held on an outstanding criminal warrant and has not been charged in connection with the hijacking at this time. The circumstances surrounding his possible involvement remain under active investigation.

The investigation remains ongoing. Anyone with information is asked to contact the Investigations Division at (630) 256-5500.

Charges are not proof of guilt. The defendant is presumed innocent and is entitled to a fair trial, where it is the burden of the State to prove guilt beyond a reasonable doubt.
