Armed Forces Day is celebrated annually on the third Saturday of May. In 1947, President Harry Truman signed the National Security Act into law, unifying the four branches of the military under a single executive authority. This led to the creation of the National Military Establishment, which was later replaced by the Department of Defense. We thank those who have and continue to serve.

May 13th is officially Children of Fallen Patriots Day, set aside to honor the children whose lives were forever changed. The date is the day Arlington National Cemetery was established in 1864. In the past 25 years, more than 15,000 children have lost parents to military conflict; we honor their sacrifice.

Happy birthday to the U.S. Army Reserves! On April 23rd of 1908, Congress created the Medial Reserve Corps, which is the official predecessor of the Army Reserve. Through its 114 year history, reservists have deployed to roughly 30 countries and contributed to two World Wars, the Cold War, the Korean War, The Vietnam War, Persian Gulf War, and many more missions!

April is the Month of the Military Child. According to the Department of Defense Education Activity, the average child in a military family will move three times more frequently on average than nonmilitary families.

Happy birthday to the Air Force Reserve! Formally established on April 14th, 1948 by President Harry Truman, members have aided in several wars on behalf of the United States since its conception. Reservists continue to fulfill their mission to Fly, Fight, and Win and can be fully deployable in 72 hours. The Reserves operate as an important part of the DoD's strategy for manpower, global reach, and flexibility. Today, we celebrate 74 years of service!

In honor of this, the goal of the panel is to amplify the unique subsets of the military child population and explore ways the military-connected community can support children with exceptional needs, those coping with divorce/separation from the military, LGBTQIA+ children, and children who have a parent/guardian serving in a training command.
