🪰 From a fly’s perspective, horses, barns, trailers and facilities are all connected — creating multiple opportunities for exposure to New World Screwworm.

🐴 Before you move: Check your horse.
🔎 When you arrive: Check again.
🪰 Always: Stay alert for potential signs of NWS.

09/23/2026

Protect your equine friends from New World Screwworm by:
➡️Monitoring for signs of NWS regularly.
➡️Checking for wounds, big or small.
➡️Checking any areas where NWS may be present, including areas with particularly sensitive skin, such as the eyes, mouth, and ears.
➡️ Consulting your veterinarian with any suspicions.

🐴Movement can increase the risk of New World Screwworm exposure.

👉As horses travel between facilities, they may encounter new environments, animal populations, and flies that can carry NWS larvae.

‼️Even small wounds can create an opportunity for NWS infestation.

⭐️At the Texas Racing Commission, equine health and safety remain a top priority.

🤝We appreciate our partners at the Texas Animal Health Commission for their continued work to protect Texas horses and support a healthy, thriving equine industry.

Prevention starts with vigilance. 🐎

💭Remember when...
The TAHC adopted enhanced testing requirements for equine infectious anemia (EIA). These regulations, paired with TAHC outreach, have reduced the number of animals confirmed with this incurable disease from 750 equine in 1997 to only 18 since September 2025.

Implementing strong testing requirements, along with producer diligence, goes a long way in protecting Texas from domestic and foreign diseases.

☀️ Extreme heat has more variables than just temperature.

👉🏻 Yesterday at Retama Park, the WetBulb Globe Temperature (WBGT) reached 86 degrees Fahrenheit. WBGT is designed to measure the impact of heat stress by accounting for shade/cloud cover, humidity, wind speed, & sunlight - providing a more complete picture of the conditions horses & people are experiencing.

🔥 As Texas temperatures rise, understanding WBGT helps us make informed decisions focused on the safety & welfare of our equine athletes.

🐴 The Texas Quarter Horse Association's Annual Yearling Sale delivered a standout year, with 393 horses through the ring and more than $9.3 million in sales- including the second-highest average for sold horses in the sale's 29-year history...

⚡️ That's a lot of horsepower!

👉🏼But the numbers only tell part of the story.

💭We asked Scott Sherwood, Executive Director of TQHA, to talk all things horse sales - from what makes a successful auction to the qualities that can signal a promising racehorse.

🐎 As part of our routine pre-race inspections, the Texas Racing Commission has implemented enhanced inspection procedures for our veterinarians and operational protocols to help monitor and protect against New World Screwworm (NWS).

✅ These proactive measures are part of TXRC's ongoing commitment to animal health and racing safety.

🤝 Thank you to our partners at the Texas Division of Emergency Management (TDEM) and the Texas Animal Health Commission (TAHC) for their continued support and collaboration!
