Austin Municipal Court Partners with Financial Health Pathways to Turn Financial Hardship Into a Pathway Forward

What if accountability in the justice system could mean more than paying a fine someone cannot afford?

That question is at the heart of a new partnership between Financial Health Pathways (FHP) and the Austin Municipal Court, who are partnering to offer FHP’s Financial Justice Diversion Program designed to help eligible Class C misdemeanor offenders experiencing financial challenges address barriers while taking meaningful steps toward a more stable future.

The partnership brings financial education and financial well-being directly into the justice process, creating an alternative pathway for people whose economic circumstances can make traditional fines and fees particularly difficult to overcome.

Rather than allowing financial hardship to become another barrier that keeps people trapped in the justice system, the program is designed to help participants understand their finances, develop practical skills, and work toward greater economic stability.

“People should not have to choose between meeting their basic needs and resolving a financial obligation. As FHP keeps fighting the criminalization of poverty, we are honored and grateful to partner with Judge Statman and the Austin Municipal Court to provide this program to qualifying defendants who might be experiencing financial hardships but want to improve their lives,” said Lourdes Zuniga, Executive Director & Founder of Financial Health Pathways. “Through this partnership we are giving people an opportunity to be accountable and to improve their financial wellbeing.”

Presiding Judge Sherry Statman emphasized that the initiative reflects a broader understanding of what meaningful justice can look like for Austin residents facing financial hardship.“Partnering with Financial Health Pathways to offer the Financial Justice program means extending justice beyond fines and fees,” said Presiding Judge Sherry Statman. “It reflects a commitment to helping individuals overcome financial barriers so they can move forward with stability and dignity. In Austin, these initiatives will create practical avenues for residents to regain control of their finances, strengthening trust in public institutions and improving overall community well-being.”
