You may have hear the (incorrect) sentiment that religion, and Christianity in particular, is anti-intellectual. This is the farthest thing from the truth. The whole concept of “the university” came out of the pursuit of truth within the monasteries of the Middle Ages. Public education was a Christian innovation that started in order to increase literacy so that ordinary people could read the Bible. As C.S. Lewis put it, “Men became scientific because they expected Law in Nature, and they expected Law in Nature because they believed in a [divine] Legislator.”
