ENERGIZE AUSTIN | For 20 years, Ride for a Cure has brought people across Scott County together for one purpose: helping local families affected by cancer.

What began in 2007 after Wendy Nasby was diagnosed with cancer has grown into a community tradition that continues to make an incredible impact. This year, Ride for a Cure raised $147,451 to support 14 recipients, helping families facing some of the most difficult days of their lives.

This year’s ride was especially meaningful as participants traveled the same route used during the original ride for Wendy 20 years ago.

The City of Austin is proud to be part of a community that continues to show up, year after year, for our neighbors when they need it most.

Congratulations to everyone behind Ride for a Cure, and thank you to every rider, volunteer, donor, sponsor, and supporter who helped make the 20th year one to remember.

Just under a year ago, the City of Austin rolled out new city-issued trash Toters for residents, along with this video. Thank you for helping make that transition go so smoothly. Your cooperation continues to make a real difference in keeping our community cleaner and easier to service.

As we approach the one-year mark, here are a few important reminders about using and caring for your Toter:

Your Toter is assigned to your address. Please don’t alter it, write on it, or take it with you if you move. Simply leave it for the next resident.

What to put in your Toter:
• Only bagged and tied household trash
• Keep the lid fully closed

What NOT to put in your Toter:
• Loose or unbagged items
• Hot ashes or anything hot or flammable
• Liquids, chemicals, solvents, paints, or acids
• Construction or demolition debris, rocks, or sand
• Hazardous materials such as oil, paint cans, and similar items

Placement reminders for collection day:
• Place your Toter at the curb
• Leave 3 feet between Toters and mailboxes
• Leave 5 feet between the Toter and vehicles
• Keep 10 feet of clearance from overhead objects like trees, gutters, or basketball hoops
• Avoid placing the Toter on steep slopes or elevated platforms

Care and storage tips:
• Store your Toter outdoors or in a garage
• Clean periodically with water and dish soap
• If your Toter is damaged from normal wear, call the City for assistance

Weekly curbside pickup happens on your designated collection day. Thank you again for doing your part to keep Austin clean, safe, and running smoothly. If you have questions, call City Hall at 812-794-2877 (Option 1).
