UT Tyler is raising the bar in healthcare training with its new Helicopter Critical Care Transport Simulation Center — the only program of its kind in the country training both nurses and paramedics, and just the second medical flight program nationwide with a clinical flight simulator.

This is the kind of innovation teaching hospitals bring to workforce development: hands-on, high-impact training that prepares clinicians for the realities of critical care in the air and helps strengthen access to care across Texas, including rural communities.

Three THOT member institutions have received new state grants to help grow Texas' forensic psychiatry workforce. UT Health Science Center at Tyler, UTMB Galveston, and UT Southwestern will each receive $555,555 to develop or expand fellowship programs that prepare physicians for this critical specialty.
These investments matter. They strengthen access to behavioral health services, support patients involved in legal proceedings, and help Texas build the specialty workforce a growing state needs.

Match Day is exciting for medical students, but its impact reaches far beyond the classroom.
Where physicians complete residency often influences where they choose to practice. That makes graduate medical education a critical part of Texas' long-term healthcare strategy, especially as communities across the state face ongoing physician shortages.
Teaching hospitals are central to that effort, helping train the physicians Texas needs now and in the future.

Match Day is a major milestone for graduating medical students, but it is also a reminder of how important residency training is to the future of healthcare in Texas.
Where physicians complete residency is a strong predictor of where they go on to practice. Expanding and sustaining graduate medical education is one of the clearest ways to strengthen the physician pipeline, support growing communities, and improve access to care across the state.
Teaching hospitals play a critical role in that work every day.

"Hospital at Home is a reliable, effective way to expand inpatient capacity and improve outcomes. Permanent authorization is essential to avoid disruptions and safeguard patient care."
— Maureen Milligan, PhD, CEO, Teaching Hospitals of Texas

THOT is calling on Congress to ensure this proven care model remains available to the patients and communities who rely on it: https://thotonline.org/hospital-at-home-program/

Hospital at Home helps teaching and public hospitals keep nurses in the workforce, reduces burnout, and allows clinicians to practice at the top of their licenses. The model improves outcomes and costs less than expanding brick-and-mortar units.

Texas teaching hospitals have demonstrated the program's value and is asking Congress to secure its future.

Since its inception, Parkland Health's Hospital at Home program has treated more than 1,100 patients, saving over 7,600 bed days while strengthening patient education, outcomes, and empowerment.

THOT is urging Congress to make Hospital at Home a permanent inpatient care option so teaching hospitals can continue delivering safe, effective inpatient care at home. Read Parkland's profile: https://thotonline.org/hospital-at-home-program/

Hospital at Home programs relieve overcrowded emergency departments, extend inpatient capacity, and deliver safe, high-quality care at home. But temporary federal extensions create unpredictable stop-and-go cycles that destabilize care.

THOT urges Congress to permanently authorize Hospital at Home: https://thotonline.org/hospital-at-home-program/

12/30/2025

University Health's Hospital at Home program has provided inpatient-level care to almost 4,000 patients since 2021 — improving patient experience, helping families stay connected, and easing pressure on overloaded inpatient units.

THOT calls on Congress to permanently authorize Hospital at Home to protect access, expand capacity, and keep proven innovation in place. See how the program works: https://thotonline.org/hospital-at-home-program/
