Some of the analysis I read contends that Obama has little confidence in getting a candidate into the Supreme Court and has thus picked a candidate that gives as few reasons not to be rejected as possible. Garland is very conservative except on a few views such as the first amendment and the environment. He's also the oldest potential nominee on his final shortlist. Overall, this is a tactical move that will either force Republicans to relent on the blockade of nominations against Obama or to face leave themselves open to serious political pressure in the upcoming election.

I think the misleading point that the news likes to make about the presidential elections is making a point of saying "Sanders won this state" and "Clinton won that state" in order to sensationalize the races and get more likes and clicks on their headlines. However, putting the races that way is inaccurate. The delegate system, aside from the super delegates, is one of proportional representation, so for all of the states so far, Sanders and Clinton have been splitting the vote. This short news blip explains the current situation in the most accurate way because of this. What do you think of the race so far?

Recently, Justice Antonin Scalia passed away at the age of 79. The New York Times has done an excellent piece on his history as a Justice and the critical decisions he's made.

President Obama has already released his shortlist of potential nominees to send to the senate. UCLA professor and former Secretary of Labor, Robert Reich predicts that he will nominate Sri Srinivasan, who was near unanimously nominated to the DC Court of Appeals before, and would be the first Indian-American on the court. His unclear viewpoints, however, would make him a very safe pick but also a gamble for the democratic establishment if they want to gain ground in the Supreme Court.
I personally think he'd make a great justice for that very reason. Most people see the SCOTUS as too political nowadays and maybe Srinivasan would help to break down that atmosphere. What do you think?

The Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee has marked their targets for new Democratic House Seats in this Politico article. The only one in Texas, however, is Congressional District 23 which encompass some of outer San Antonio and the Valley, excluding El Paso. While they're using they're campaign data to make the decisions, I think they might be ignoring the potential of Sanders' ability to get students and other people out to vote, when most don't.
All six of the Republican-controlled districts that cut into Austin are heavily weighed against a democratic candidate since those districts encompass much of the other parts of rural Texas, but I think there's a possibility to make something happen, given the momentum. What do you think?

While on face, this can be seen as a simple reminder that the last democratic debates and the New Hampshire primary were all in the last week, the article says that Trump got the most amount of interactions on the day of the primary. I think this means that people are having a more serous discussion about the merits of Sanders vs Clinton this race than before, when Hillary seemed to be the unanimous decision according to the headlines.
What do you think?
