This week at City Hall, I chaired a meeting of the Housing and Planning Committee where we discussed several important initiatives to make Austin more affordable and livable.

We reviewed new approaches to green social housing, efforts to update our Land Development Code, and strategies to ensure housing development keeps pace with infrastructure investments while protecting residents from displacement.

Finally, the committee unanimously voted to advance a resolution updating Austin’s Strategic Housing Blueprint, our city’s 10-year housing plan to create 60,000 affordable housing units.

The update will help us build a more comprehensive and flexible housing strategy that connects affordable homes with jobs, transit, and essential services.
Next stop: the full City Council on November 5!

District 1 is committed to helping residence understand what is on the ballot this November.

Austin voters will decide City Council races in District 1, 3, 5, 8, and 9, two bond propositions totaling $295 million for parks, recreation, and libraries, and eight proposed City Charter amendments.

Your exact ballot depends on where you are registered, so take time before election day to review what applies to you.

ICYMI: On 10/8, Austin City Council designated Doris Miller Auditorium a City of Austin Historic Landmark. The USO opened it in 1944 as a recreation building for Black service members, and it was named for Doris “Dorie” Miller, the first Black service member awarded the Navy Cross for heroism at Pearl Harbor.

In the decades that followed it became a Chitlin’ Circuit stop that hosted Nat King Cole, Louis Armstrong, Little Richard, as well as fairs, tournaments, and civic gatherings.

What it means for the property: the auditorium remains a public facility, and landmark zoning adds preservation review for future changes, so its historic character is considered in any renovation.

Last week, our District 1 team toured Zilker Park ahead of ACL Fest’s second week. We got a firsthand look at the festival infrastructure behind one of Austin‘s biggest events. Collin Wallis, CEO of the Austin Parks Foundation joined us to discuss the foundations long-standing partnership with C3 presents, which helps fund parks, trails, and green spaces across Austin.

Austin City Limits Music Festival (ACL) is more than an entertainment festival, it is an investment in Austin that keeps giving back long after the music stops.

Learn more about the partnership and how you can volunteer at the festival next year at Austinparks.org/acl

It is not too late to celebrate the rest of Hispanic Heritage month, now through October 15.

We are honoring the histories, cultures, and contributions of Hispanic and Latino communities in District 1 and across Austin whose leadership and traditions help shape the neighborhoods we call home.

We encourage you to take part in a local event in the final week of Hispanic Heritage Month and celebrate with us.

If you know of any Hispanic Heritage Month events happening in the city feel free to share them in the comments.

Join us as we celebrate Austin Public Library’s 100th anniversary!

Since opening in a rented room with 500 donated books in 1926, APL has grown into a system of 20 branches, offering far more than books with programs for every age.

Two of those branches are right here in District 1, and their history matters. In 1933, during segregation, Carver Branch opened on Angelina Street as APL‘s first branch, giving black Austinites a library of their own.

For decades, it was a crucial place to read, learn and gather. The original building became the George Washington Carver Museum and Cultural Center that stands beside today’s branch.

University Hills branch opened in 1986, putting a library close to home for neighbors in the area and later growing into a hub for youth, technology programs and resources for the community.

We’re also hopeful that a third District 1 library will one day call Colony Park home.

Enjoy the upcoming Centennial party at the Central location on October 17 and discover more events in District 1 and Austin abroad at library.austintexas.gov/100
