Statement from Mayor Pro Tem José "Chito" Vela, Councilwoman Vanessa Fuentes, and Council Member José Velásquez on today's ICE shooting in Austin:

“Another person has been shot by ICE. Today, it happened in Austin.

We are disgusted by the continued recklessness and disregard for human life by this administration. ICE has never made our communities safer, and today is a tragic reminder of this fact.

ICE must leave Austin now.

We have no confidence in an internal investigation from DHS or DOJ. We urge APD to immediately open an independent investigation, with a review of the evidence by the Travis County District Attorney’s Office, as is the protocol in other police shootings. The people of Austin deserve answers, and we demand full transparency and accountability.

No federal agency is above scrutiny when the safety and rights of our community are at stake. ICE must stop terrorizing our communities.“

I am deeply disturbed by today’s shooting in North Austin involving an ICE agent and a member of our community.

The facts surrounding today’s incident are still emerging, but what is clear is that a person was shot and hospitalized. We need a full, transparent, and independent investigation into today’s incident, including a clear accounting of the circumstances surrounding the ICE agent’s use of force. Accountability is nonnegotiable. Our residents should not have to live in fear.

It is unacceptable that the state is forcing local tax dollars to be spent assisting ICE.

I am thinking of the person who was injured and their loved ones, and I am calling for transparency, accountability, and answers for our community.

Yesterday Travis County, Texas kicked off Hispanic Heritage Month! I’m proud to recognize the vibrant cultures, histories, traditions, and contributions of the Hispanic and Latine communities that help make Travis County a wonderful place to live.

Hispanic and Latine neighbors have enriched our county through art and music, food and traditions, entrepreneurship, public service, advocacy, and the countless everyday acts that strengthen our communities.

This month is an opportunity to celebrate the rich heritage, honor the generations who came before us, and recognize the people shaping our community today!
