Exciting news for Austin Woods Drive!
The Austin Public Works and Austin Transportation departments will construct a sidewalk on Austin Woods Drive between Mesa Drive and Tallwood Drive. The project team is evaluating four different sidewalk design options. Staff is seeking feedback from the community on these designs, and we encourage all parents and stakeholders to visit the virtual Open House and take the survey. Please select your preferred option and show support for the installation of a sidewalk to create a safe route to school for students who use Austin Woods. The survey is available until May 14, 2021.
**For the record, I prefer option 1 and ranked them in the order listed, 1, 2, 3, & 4. I believe a sidewalk on the north side of the road is safer because it has no road crossings which are inherently less safe for pedestrians. I also prefer we keep more parking available to families and neighbors. And, the more car congestion, the slower the speeds on the road.

3-1-1 reports collected over the last 5 years show Austin Woods Drive has repeatedly been brought to the attention of the Public Works Department for pedestrian safety issues. Meanwhile, Hyridge Drive and even Tallwood Drive have received far fewer reports by concerned citizens. Here are the stats on reports specifically mentioning sidewalks issues, school zone or school crossing issues, traffic calming needs and right of way obstructions as of May 22, 2019 . . .
On Austin Woods Drive, 65 of 87 reports, or 75% of 3-1-1 reports are pedestrian related issues. 64 of the 65 reports were assigned to the Public Works Department. 1 was assigned to the Transportation Department.
On Hyridge Drive, 13 of 187 reports, or 7% of 3-1-1 reports are pedestrian related issues. 2 of the 13 were in regards to homes at intersections leading to Hill Elementary School. 12 of the 13 reports were assigned to the Public Works Department and 1 to the Transportation Department.
On Tallwood Drive, 23 of 233, or 10% of 3-1-1 reports are pedestrian related issues. 16 of the 23 reports are specifically related to the 2 properties at the corners of Austin Woods Drive and directly across from Hill Elementary School. 21 of the 24 reports were assigned to the Public Works Department. 2 were assigned to the Transportation Department.

Here's a link to the study prepared by the City of Austin that prioritizes all the projects in Austin District 10.
For the purposes of Hill Elementary, you can read pages 1-9 to understand the methodology. Pages 23-35 prioritize projects around Hill (and other schools in our area). You can ignore the rest of the report.

SIGN THE PETITION to support addressing safety on Austin Woods NOW with bond funds!
We would like the City to follow the recommendations of their own study. We want the newly available bond funding to be spent to address our highest safety priority, Austin Woods, now. If we don't speak up the bond funding allocated to Hill will be spent to improve Hyridge from Mesa to Tallwood first. If we don't push now, a greater need, a safe route at the doorstep of our school, will be ignored.
PLEASE SIGN THIS PETITION! THANK YOU!

Janea Spence of the city's Department of Public Works recently shared the engineer's report and cost estimates for a sidewalk on Austin Woods Drive. Notice the effort to minimally impact the protected and heritage trees through bump outs and hand excavation techniques.
