Today, Refugio County had the opportunity to present before the Texas Historical Commission Architecture Committee regarding the Texas Historic Courthouse Preservation Program.

The committee spent considerable time discussing Refugio County's progress, the success of our ongoing courthouse restoration, and the continued needs of this historic project. We are grateful for the thoughtful questions, encouraging discussion, and the committee's continued partnership in preserving one of Texas' historic treasures.

The committee's recommendations will now move to the full Texas Historical Commission, which will consider them during its quarterly meeting this Friday.

Thank you to the Commissioners, committee members, THC staff, and everyone who has supported the restoration of the Refugio County Courthouse. Every step forward brings us closer to preserving this landmark for future generations.

The Refugio County Courthouse will be under construction for the next few years-- amd it may be messy, it may be noisy, and the parking may be less convenient for a bit, but progress takes patience, and I am just giddy at the sight of the temporary fencing👷‍♀️🚧

Last post on the Refugio County Courthouse Restoration Groundbreaking Ceremony-- because is was so much more than just a ceremony. It was a moment made possible by so many hands, partners, and advocates who believe in this community and its future.

Thank you again to our project partners at Texas Division of Emergency Management (for forgiving the original $6M loan and announcing forgiveness of the remaining $3M balance(!)), the Texas Historical Commission for awarding the $4M emergency grant, State Senator Lois Kolkhorst and former Representative Geanie Morrison for their legislative efforts to secure the funding with former Judge Bob Blaschke, representatives from Congressman Michael Cloud’s office and neighboring officials like Ray Garza, Aransas County Judge who attended the event, Komatsu Architecture, our owners rep Broaddus & Associates, JC Stoddard Construction and all of the contractors and subcontractors slated to make this happen, event speakers Tim Delaney Refugio County Historical Commission & Texas Bayside Historical Society), the Refugio County Museum/Historical Society, Pastor T. Wayne Price First Baptist Church of Refugio for the lovely invocation, the Refugio County Chamber of Commerce Refugio Chamber for the awesome refreshments, the Refugio Independent School District Mighty Bobcat Band (outstandingly talented kids!), Sam DuBose and Woodsboro Independent School District for the ceremonial box, and EVERYONE who is, was, or will be part of this historic effort.

👏Thank you ❤️

More from the Refugio County Courthouse Restoration Groundbreaking Ceremony-- and a special thank-you to Rev. Sam DuBose, who quietly built the wooden box we used for the ceremonial soil. No credit asked or spotlight needed-- and he had class at Woodsboro Independent School District so he couldn't attend-- just solid craftsmanship, real care, and a genuine love for this community.

With little notice, and a million other things going on, he MADE this box so we would have something nice to use instead of a pile of dirt on the courthouse steps.

It was thoughtful, and sturdy, and the perfect representation of the people who make Refugio County what it is.

Grateful for every neighbor who shows up in ways big and small, loud and quiet, to help move our county forward.

More footage and photos from the Refugio County Courthouse Restoration Groundbreaking Ceremony-- including a moving invocation from Pastor T. Wayne Price First Baptist Church of Refugio and words of encouragement from Sen. Lois Kolkhorst, who was instrumental in the County's ability to receive the necessary funds to start this project!

Ryan Brantley from Komatsu Architecture explained a little about the project, and Tim Delaney from the Refugio County Historical Commission put everything in perspective-- they really don't make 'em like they used to!
