We spent the day going to all the stores to find the best variety of objects for survivors to use during their interviews with law enforcement, advocates, forensic nurses and prosecutors at APD, TCSO and Travis County DA's office (and hopefully a few other places). Here is the inspiration for this: About 7 years ago, I was prepping a victim for trial. As I was running around getting 100 things in order I was flying through my list of things I needed done: have her listen to the 911 call so she could authenticate it, watch a surveillance video to ID the defendant, this, that, all the things. It didn't occur to me that I was traumatizing her. I was. I walked in the office and she was shaking, in tears and I realized what I had done. About 6 months before, a colleague had given out stress balls for Christmas. All I could think of was to hand it to her. She immediately began to squeeze it. As we left to walk up to court she went to hand it to me and I told her to keep it. As she testified for hours, staring at her abuser, she squeezed it the entire time. It was a small solution to my huge mistake--but it was something. As survivors tell their painful, personal, difficult stories to strangers--the deserve a little humanity. At least a tiny recognition that we see and hear their struggle and recognize what we are putting them through as we ask them to do the impossible. These are where these are going. For each of these stress balls, we will serve one survivor. Our hope is they take it with them on their journey and that it provides some relief as they sacrifice their body, soul, story and self to keep our communities safe. If you wish to contribute, you can do so by donating to my venmo -hohensee or go to RESPOND Against Violence www.respondagainstviolence.org. Take a moment to read about the story of Molly Jane, who inspired so many soft interview rooms at Project Beloved: The Molly Jane Mission and the incredible work of Texas Forensic Nurse Examiners - Txfne: Forensic Center of Excellence
to soften the experience of survivors who sacrifice themselves.
