The partnership between Austin Animal Services and the Travis Unit has led to the creation of an impactful 12-week program called Enduring Service, where rehabilitation and compassion intersect.
Through this initiative, inmates work hands-on with shelter dogs, providing consistent training, socialization, and care to prepare them for life in a permanent home. As the dogs gain obedience and confidence, the inmates develop valuable skills, patience, and a sense of purpose, creating a mutually beneficial environment.
By the end of the program, the dogs are “home ready” for adoption, and participants walk away with a renewed outlook—making Enduring Service a powerful example of second chances on both ends of the leash.

Today, 60+ faith-driven men at the Travis Unit were put in the spotlight for the exceptional dedication and perseverance they have displayed over a six week period while completing all requirements to graduate from the Life Skills program.
Their commitment to personal growth and positive change is a powerful testament to what can be accomplished when determination meets faith. The presence of their families at graduation brought an added layer of encouragement, reminding every graduate that they are supported, valued, and are never alone.
As these men continue on their journey, may they hold tight to the reminder that progress never stops, and success is not about how far you’ve come, but how you continue to move forward when faith is driving you in the right direction.
