In the spring and summer of 1988, Gloria Chun Hoo was a key player in the YWCA USA new logo design. It was the era of YWCA celebrating new beginnings with the implementation of the sunrise logo that ran from 1989 to 2004. It was a defining moment that created persimmon as our signature color. Thank you Gloria Chun Hoo for shaping YWCA!

This Mother’s Day, we celebrate the strength, love, and resilience of mothers and caregivers in our community. And recognize the challenges they still face every day.

At YWCA, we meet women and families at pivotal moments in their lives. Whether it’s providing pathways to economic stability, educating about reproductive health and justice, or empowering youth through skills development and behavioral health, our work is rooted in supporting women as they build stronger futures for themselves and their children.

Today, we invite you to honor a mother, caregiver, or someone who has made a difference in your life. Let them know what they mean to you.

This AAPI Heritage Month, YWCA USA honors Mabel Ping-Hua Lee, a trailblazing suffragist and Teachers College alum who fought for women’s right to vote while still a teenager. At just 16, she led New York City’s 1912 suffrage parade on horseback—yet was barred from voting herself under the Chinese Exclusion Act. We celebrate Mabel as an unsung changemaker whose legacy continues to inspire our fight for equity and justice.

With the recent Supreme Court Decision in Louisiana v. Callais, we must take inspiration from the efforts like those of Mabel Ping-Hua Lee and continuing fighting for equitable voting rights for all.

This Saturday, May 9th join Nico Lang, a longtime LGBTQ+ journalist and author of the recently released book, American Teenager, which documents the lives of trans kids and their loved ones in seven different states. Lang's goal was to speak back to extreme anti-trans rhetoric about youth by showing trans young people as they actually are: powerfully human.

Saturday, May 9 — reading/Q&A at Life in the City UMC (205 E. Monroe St.), with the help of the Trans Education Network of Texas.

Update: Proposed Restrictions on Voter Registration Are Likely to Harm Young Voters 04/27/2026

This article explains how new voting laws — especially proposals like the SAVE Act — could make it much harder for young people to register and participate in elections. Young voters are more likely to rely on online, mail-in, or DMV-based registration, all of which could be restricted, young people also move more frequently and are less likely to have documents like passports, making these new requirements especially burdensome. These changes would deepen existing barriers and could significantly reduce youth voter turnout.

The SAVE Act Would Stop Some Disabled People from Voting - Autistic Self Advocacy Network 04/26/2026

This article lays out how the SAVE Act would fall especially hard on disabled voters, making it much harder — and in many cases impossible — for them to participate in elections. the bill would ban mail in voter registration and require everyone to register in person, a huge barrier for many disabled people who can’t drive, don’t have accessible transportation, or rely on support workers who wouldn’t be allowed to register on their behalf. These changes aren’t just an inconvenience; they would effectively block thousands of disabled Americans from voting at all, stripping away their voice in our democracy.
