AVALON, NJ: Firefighters of the Avalon Volunteer Fire Department continued the fall training calendar October 12th, focusing on car crashes and adding industrial accidents. Members used scrap municipal vehicles to train on vehicle crashes. Avalon firefighters drill every Monday to learn new skills and reinforce best practices.
On the 12th, Firefighters trained on basic extrication tools for removing pinned victims from inside vehicles. The Borough council invested in cordless battery-powered Hurst extrication tools last year, a direct descendant of the original Jaws-of-Life.
Members also trained for industrial accidents, considering the scenario of a construction dumpster pinning a victim, which may require high-pressure lifting airbags to remove.
