FIRE MARSHAL'S OFFICE WARNS RESIDENTS ABOUT FLOOD-DAMAGED BATTERIES

CAPE MAY COURT HOUSE, NJ - The Cape May County Fire Marshal's Office is asking residents to use caution with batteries and battery-powered devices that may have been exposed to flood water.
A battery does not have to look damaged to be unsafe. Water exposure can damage lithium-ion and other rechargeable batteries and may cause them to overheat, catch fire, or explode.
If a battery or battery-powered device has been in flood water, do not plug it in, charge it, or try to test it.
This includes batteries used in power tools, e-bikes and e-scooters, cell phones, laptops, tablets, backup power systems, and other rechargeable devices.
Flood-damaged batteries should also not be placed in household trash or curbside recycling. A damaged battery can create a fire hazard during collection, transportation, or processing.
Residents who are unsure whether a battery has been damaged, or who need information about proper disposal, should contact the Cape May County Municipal Utilities Authority (MUA) Headquarters at 609-465-9026 before handling or disposing of the battery.
The Fire Marshal's Office reminds residents that if there is any question about whether a battery was exposed to flood water, the safest course is to leave it unplugged and get guidance before using or disposing of it.

VIEW: AVALON FLOOD MAPPER FOR UPCOMING STORM CREATED BY SHORELYSAFE
Avalon’s partnership with ShorelySafe (Joe Martucci/PJ Hondros) produces this new Avalon flood mapper for tidal flooding events. You can view a color-coded bar on the bottom that shows when moderate tidal flooding will occur (in red). To view the progression and regression of tidal flooding, simply hit the “play” button on the lower left of the screen (white box with red arrow). The Avalon flood mapper shows where tidal flooding is possible during the upcoming storm. Thanks Joe and PJ for this helpful tool!

On Saturday, August 29th, the Avalon public safety volunteers and employees were treated to a generous gathering offered by the Robert Irvine Foundation and the Schanz Family. The family wanted to express its appreciation to Avalon Volunteer Fire Department, Avalon NJ Police Department, and Avalon Rescue Squad for their public service and commitment to safety. The safety team was treated to a generous lunch with fellowship.

Chef Robert Irvine, known by many as a celebrity chef, attended the event which was catered by Polpo Restaurant. Collectively, the Avalon Public Safety team wants to thank the Robert Irvine Foundation, the Schanz family, and Polpo for the generous luncheon and the expression of gratitude. We remain proud to serve the citizens and visitors in Avalon.

Avalon Rescue Squad saves lives... SO CAN YOU!

Donate blood on June 18th or 24th to support emergency responders saving lives on the frontlines.

Avalon EMS has partnered with JeffSTAT Critical Care Transport, AtlantiCare EMS and the American Red Cross for a blood drive. Avalon works with JeffStat MedEvac Helicopters and AtlantiCare Mobile ICU Paramedics to treat the most severely injured patients in Avalon. Those units now carry life-saving whole blood.

But it doesn't grow on a tree... IT COMES FROM YOU!

What Is Whole Blood?
Whole blood is revolutionizing emergency care by giving trauma patients all they need – red cells, plasma, and platelets in one bag, helping stop bleeding and stabilize them before reaching the hospital. Just one donation can help multiple patients in critical need, from accident victims to those battling cancer.
