This month is our month to flush fire hydrants and do maintenance on any that need it. So for the next 3 Tuesdays nights the AFD will be out doing fire hydrant maintenance.

If you are traveling through the city those afternoons please watch for: Fire trucks, Firefighters, and any water that may be in the roadway.

We would like to thank you for your understanding and apologize for any inconvenience this may cause.

Have a great day and stay safe!

OUTDATED
Hurricane Isaias has made landfall in Destin FL as a strong category 2 hurricane. It will continue as a category 1 hurricane and tropical storm as it moves inland most of the night.

Here is the latest from the national weather service out of Peachtree City.

Over the next few hours we will start to fill that pick up in wind and rain which can lead to severe weather.

Since this storm is moving through during the night we encourage everyone to keep the device charged, on, and where you can hear alerts if needed.

We will continue to monitor throughout the night and post when necessary.

Remember stay weather aware and safe

OUTDATED:

Update on Hurricane Isaias:

Overnight, it strengthened to a Category 3 hurricane and is expected to make landfall as a Category 2 hurricane.

The major changes that could impact us:

1. The tornado threat from the outer bands, which will impact our area, has increased. We could see possible spin-up tornadoes, along with heavy rain, flooding, and gusty winds.

2. The timing of the storm has accelerated somewhat. We will more than likely start feeling the effects of the storm early this afternoon instead of later tonight, as originally predicted.

Those are the two major changes. Right now, models are favoring a more eastern landfall rather than a western landfall, which means the impacts could be a little stronger for us.

The main thing to remember is that this is not another Hurricane Helene. We are not in the direct path of this storm like we were during Helene. Our main concerns are the outer bands, which can bring possible severe weather to our area.

We are not trying to scare you; we are trying to keep you informed and prepared for this storm. We will be posting updates as needed, but trust that we are monitoring this storm closely throughout the day.

Please check trusted weather outlets, local news outlets, and the National Weather Service for live and ongoing updates.

Remember, don’t be scared, be prepared, and stay weather-aware today!

Graphics are OUTDATED:
If you haven’t been following the latest weather updates, Hurricane Isaias has developed in the Gulf and is expected to strengthen before making landfall along the Florida Panhandle or Alabama coast.

The Avera Fire Department is closely monitoring this system as forecast models have shifted both east and west over the past several days. We are paying particular attention to any potential impacts to our area as the storm continues to develop and move inland.

At this time, our primary concerns include: Heavy rainfall, Possible flooding, Gusty winds

Our area is already under an area flood watch, until Sunday morning.

We encourage everyone to monitor this system closely tomorrow and throughout the week. We will share additional updates as needed.

For the latest information, we recommend following the National Weather Service, local meteorologists and news outlets, and other trusted weather sources.

One great resource to follow is Central Georgia Weather Authority. They provide regular updates during weather events and focus on Central Georgia, making them a valuable source of information for our area.

Please continue to monitor the forecast, stay prepared, and take any weather alerts or warnings seriously. Conditions and forecasts can change, so staying informed is essential.

Last night, we had the opportunity to host 32 first responders from two counties, representing eight fire departments and two sheriff’s offices.

Among those in attendance were 10 fire chiefs and assistant chiefs, one sheriff, more than five ranked fire officers, and more than 15 firefighters. We all came together with one goal in mind: to expand our knowledge, increase our awareness, and better prepare ourselves for the dangers associated with re**er containers.

The training was presented by Greene County Fire Chief Rodney Wiggins, who has made it his mission to educate firefighters and departments about the dangers these containers can present.

Chief Wiggins began teaching this class after Greene County Fire Rescue suffered the tragic line-of-duty death of Battalion Chief Chris Eddy, who lost his life while battling a tractor-trailer fire involving a re**er container. Since then, Chief Wiggins has worked to bring awareness to firefighters about these hazards, how to recognize them, and how to better prepare for incidents involving them.

Here at the Avera Fire Department, we recognize this as a potential hazard to firefighters in our area. With major highways running through our county, these types of containers travel through our communities every day. Because of that, we felt it was important to bring this training to our area and make it the focus of our Firefighter Association County Drill/Training.

Our goal is simple: to educate, prepare, and help keep our firefighters safer.

We would like to extend a sincere thank-you to Chief Rodney Wiggins for taking the time to travel to our area and deliver such an important message. His knowledge, experience, and dedication to firefighter safety are greatly appreciated.

Training like this is a reminder that the more we know before the call comes in, the better prepared we are when it matters most.

On October 3rd, 2026, at 6:34 PM, the Avera Fire Department was requested for mutual aid by the Glascock County Fire Department to assist with a structure fire that was endangering multiple structures.

Upon arrival of Glascock County Fire Department, firefighters discovered a medium-sized shop with heavy smoke and flames showing from the building. Fire attack operations were initiated at this time.

Avera Tanker-3 arrived shortly after to provide additional manpower and an additional water supply if needed.

Through the combined efforts of both departments, the fire was quickly and safely contained and extinguished, preventing further spread and damage.

We are extremely thankful to have such a great working relationship with the Glascock County Fire Department. Whether it’s manpower, water supply, or simply having another department there when help is needed, we are grateful for the opportunity to work together and support the citizens of both communities.
