🔥 Fire Extinguisher Training at Costco 🧯

On Friday, members of the Avon Fire Department provided fire extinguisher training to approximately 15 employees of Costco Avon as part of the company’s annual Safety Week.

The training included both classroom instruction and hands-on practice. Employees learned about the different types of fire extinguishers, how to select and safely operate an extinguisher, and when it is appropriate to attempt to extinguish a fire versus evacuating and calling 911.

Each participant then had the opportunity to put those skills into practice by operating a fire extinguisher during a live-fire training exercise. Employees practiced the P.A.S.S. method for extinguisher use:

🧯 P – Pull the pin
🧯 A – Aim at the base of the fire
🧯 S – Squeeze the handle
🧯 S – Sweep from side to side

Training opportunities like this are an important part of the Avon Fire Department’s commitment to community risk reduction. By working directly with our local businesses and their employees, we can help prevent emergencies, improve preparedness, and give people the knowledge and confidence to respond safely when an emergency occurs.

Avon’s businesses are an important part of our community, and we value the opportunity to build strong partnerships with them before an emergency happens. We thank Costco for making employee safety a priority and for partnering with the Avon Fire Department during their annual Safety Week.

Working together, we can make Avon a safer place to live, work, and do business.

🔥 One Sprinkler Made the Difference

Yesterday, the Avon Fire Department responded to a fire in a large industrial building. A single fire sprinkler operated directly over the area of ignition and controlled the fire, limiting its spread until firefighters completed extinguishment.

Because the sprinkler system was properly installed and maintained, damage was minimal—and the company was back up and running today.

Fire sprinklers provide the same protection where we are most vulnerable: in our homes. A 15-year study of fire sprinkler performance in Scottsdale, Arizona, found that:

đź’§ Sprinklers discharged an average of 341 gallons of water per fire, compared with 2,935 gallons discharged through fire department hoses.

đź’µ Average fire losses were $2,166 in homes protected by sprinklers, compared with $45,019 where sprinklers were not present.

Whether protecting a large industrial facility or your family’s home, fire sprinklers control fires early—using less water, limiting damage, and helping people and businesses recover more quickly.

On July 28th, the Avon Fire Department responded to back-to-back fires that serve as important reminders about preventing fires in our community.
Waste Management Recycling Facility – Ledin Drive
Crews responded to a fire inside the drum feeder of the Waste Management recycling facility. The building's automatic sprinkler system quickly controlled the fire, preventing it from spreading throughout the facility. Firefighters remained on scene for approximately two hours extinguishing hot spots and ensuring the fire was completely out.
The fire is believed to have been caused by improperly discarded materials, most likely a lithium-ion battery.
Lithium-ion batteries should never be placed in household trash or curbside recycling bins. Damaged or discarded batteries can be crushed during the recycling process, causing fires that endanger workers, damage equipment, and disrupt operations.
To recycle batteries safely:
🔋 Use designated battery recycling drop-off locations.
🔋 Tape the terminals of loose lithium-ion batteries before transporting them.
🔋 Never throw rechargeable batteries into household trash or single-stream recycling.
Residential Fire – Malley Avenue
Later in the day, firefighters responded to a mulch fire outside a single-family home that quickly spread to the home's vinyl siding.
Fortunately, crews had just returned from the recycling facility fire and were still at the station cleaning equipment. Because firefighters were already assembled, Avon Fire was able to place nine firefighters on scene within two minutes of dispatch, allowing crews to quickly stop the fire before it spread into the home.
With the hot, dry weather we've experienced this summer, mulch, dry vegetation, and other combustible landscaping materials can ignite rapidly from discarded smoking materials, grills, fireworks, or any open flame.
Please help prevent these fires by:
• Keeping grills, smokers, and fire pits well away from mulch, decks, and siding.
• Properly disposing of smoking materials.
• Never parking hot vehicles or equipment over dry grass.
• Watering mulch and landscaping during prolonged dry periods when practical.
• Remaining vigilant whenever using any open flame outdoors.
The Avon Fire Department wants to thank our firefighters on and off duty for their work during the hot weather as well as Avon Police, Holbrook Regional Emergency Communication Center, Boston Sparks Association, and Brockton Fire Department for covering the town while Avon crews were tied up.

đźš’ Avon Fire Department Enhances Emergency Response with New In-Vehicle Technology đźš’

The Avon Fire Department is pleased to announce the installation of mobile data tablets in all front-line emergency response vehicles thanks to funding provided through the Massachusetts Community Compact Cabinet's Information Technology grant program.

These tablets will provide firefighters and EMS personnel with real-time incident information while responding to emergencies, including dispatch updates, mapping, hydrant locations, pre-incident plans, and critical building information. Having this information available before arriving on scene helps our crews make informed decisions faster, improving both firefighter safety and the level of service we provide to our community.

We would like to thank the Massachusetts Executive Office for Administration & Finance for supporting this important technology initiative through the Community Compact IT grant program. Investments like these help modernize local government while enhancing public safety for everyone who lives, works, and visits Avon.

This project is another step forward in our commitment to using technology to improve emergency response and protect our community.

Last week, members of the Avon Fire Department visited the 3rd grade classes at Butler Elementary School to talk about the importance of smoke alarms, home escape planning, and general fire safety.

The program was part of the “Sound Off with the Home Fire Safety Patrol” initiative, made possible through a FEMA grant. In addition to classroom education, the program also provides home visits and smoke alarm installation assistance for families who may not have working smoke alarms in their homes.

Working smoke alarms save lives. We are proud to partner with our schools and community to help ensure every family in Avon has the protection they need.

If your family needs assistance with smoke alarms or would like more information about the program, please contact the Avon Fire Department.

Thank you to the students and staff at Butler Elementary for welcoming us into your classrooms!
