Avondale Volunteer Fire Company mourns the tragic passing of fellow Firefighter/Operator Shane Hirstius and his fiancée, Leah, who lost their lives off-duty last night.

Shane was a dedicated public servant who answered the call for both Herbert Wallace Fire Company #1 and Third District Volunteer Fire Department, serving proudly as a Firefighter/Operator at both stations. He was the heart and soul of the firehouse—an operator you could count on when the tones dropped, and a brother who could light up the entire bay the second he walked through the door. Anyone who knew Shane knew how much he loved the job, his firehouse families, and above all, his beloved Leah.

Our department sends its condolences, thoughts and prayers to Shane and Leah’s families, their loved ones, and our brothers and sisters at Third District VFD & Herbert Wallace Volunteer Fire Company during this unimaginable time.

Please keep everyone who loved them in your prayers.

Thank you for your service Shane.
Rest easy, brother. 🖤🚒❤️
