Please join us in congratulating Avery McLaughlin on beginning his career as a full-time firefighter with Awendaw-McClellanville Fire Department!

Avery’s journey started with a ride-along that sparked a passion for the fire service. He soon became a volunteer, taking classes, riding with crews and attending weekly meetings. Within months, he had the opportunity to join the department full-time and attend the South Carolina Fire Academy Recruit Academy.

After graduating on September 25, Avery officially began his new career the following week, making the transition from teaching to serving his community in a new way.

We’re proud to have Avery on the team and look forward to seeing him grow in the fire service. Congratulations, Avery! 🚒

Flooding is possible today. Stay alert and be prepared.

As rain continues to move through our area, be aware of changing conditions and the potential for flooding. Make sure you have multiple ways to receive weather warnings and know what actions to take if flooding impacts your area.

🚧 Turn Around, Don’t Drown! Never drive through floodwater or around barricades. Flooded roads can be deeper than they appear, and driving through them puts you, your passengers, and first responders at risk.

🌊 Floodwater can hide open storm drains, sharp debris, and other dangerous hazards. As tempting as it may look, flooded streets are not the place to splash around!

📲 Stay informed:
🔹 Follow Charleston County Government and the US National Weather Service Charleston SC for updates.
🔹 Sign up for CHS Alerts to receive notifications about emergencies, severe weather, and major traffic impacts.

🌧️ Before the storm rolls in, take a few minutes to prepare.

With storms expected across the Lowcountry this weekend, Awendaw-McClellanville Fire Department is reminding residents to take a few simple steps now:

🔦 Charge your phones and have flashlights ready.
🌳 Secure outdoor furniture and loose items that could blow away.
🚗 Avoid driving through flooded roads.
⚡ Stay away from downed power lines and report them to your utility provider.
📲 Keep an eye on weather alerts and have multiple ways to receive emergency warnings.

For our rural and coastal communities, heavy rain and strong winds can mean flooded roads, fallen trees and power outages.

A little preparation goes a long way. Stay weather-aware, look out for your neighbors and stay safe this weekend!

🌧️ A rainy weekend is ahead, and coastal flooding is a concern.

Widespread rainfall is expected to develop Friday night into early Saturday, with the heaviest rainfall possible Saturday. Rain may continue through Sunday.

With higher-than-normal high tides expected this weekend, heavy rainfall occurring around high tide could lead to rapid coastal flooding in Charleston and other coastal areas.

Here's how to prepare:

🌧️ Allow extra time for travel and stay alert to changing conditions.
🚗 Never drive through flooded roads.
🌊 Be especially cautious in areas prone to tidal or street flooding.
📱 Monitor local weather updates and sign up for CHS Alerts to receive emergency notifications.

🔌 Quick charging check: are you using the right charger?

Use the charger designed for your device, and don’t ignore a cord that’s damaged, frayed or worn out.

It’s also worth paying attention to what your battery is telling you. 🚩

If you notice unusual heat, swelling, leaking, a strange smell, hissing or other unusual sounds, stop using the device.

A little attention now can help prevent a much bigger problem later.
