KSHSAA Covered State Game of the Week presented by MMTH
Eight-Player Division II No. 1 Hanover (6-0) at Division II No. 2 Axtell (6-0)
Arguably the game of the year in Eight-Player football, the KSHSAA Covered game of the Week features the two teams that have combined for the last six Division II state titles and nine of the last 10 championships.
Hanover ended both of Axtell’s streaks last year, ending the Eagles’ state-record 58-game winning streak with a 26-18 win in their regular season meeting. Hanover then won the playoff rematch 34-24, ending Axtell’s run of four straight state championships.
Of the two, only Axtell has gone the distance in a game this year. That came in the opener when the Eagles won a 74-44 shootout with Reno County Homeschool, which has handed reigning Division I champion South Central its lone loss this year. On the season, Axtell has outscored its opponents 370-90.
Hanover has been even better. It’s only hint of a challenge was a 62-20 win over Thayer Central (Neb.) in the season opener, a game the Wildcats led 40-0. In its other five games, Hanover has outscored its opponents 250-12.
Kadrick Cohorst threw for 146 yards and 2 TDs and ran for 4 TDs in Hanover’s 52-6 romp past Troy last week. On the season, Cohorst has thrown for 796 yards.
His counterpart, Wyatt Detweiler ran for 126 yards and 5 TDs and threw for another TD in last week’s 64-14 win over Linn. Detweiler has thrown for 840 yards and 15 touchdowns and run for another 494 and 15 TDs this season.
