Maryland Humanities We create & support educational experiences in the humanities that inspire all Marylanders to embrace lifelong learning.

Maryland Humanities formed in 1973 at the invitation of the National Endowment for the Humanities. Initially known as the Maryland Committee for the Humanities and Public Policy, Maryland Humanities incorporated in 1977 and acted almost exclusively as a grant-making organization for 20 years. Beginning in the early 1990s, Maryland Humanities began to conduct its own public humanities programs, while still awarding grants to support the programming efforts of Maryland institutions and organizations. In 2002, cuts in state funding prompted Maryland Humanities to reach out to the community for foundation, corporation, and individual support. A successful capital campaign allowed Maryland Humanities to relocate its headquarters to Mount Vernon Cultural District in 2005, where the high-profile location provides enhanced visibility for our programming in the vibrant cultural center of Baltimore. In 2006, Maryland Humanities revised its mission statement to reflect its commitment to working with communities, groups, and audiences throughout the state to stimulate and promote informed dialogue and civic engagement on issues critical to Marylanders. Programs such as Practicing Democracy and initiatives like theโ€Remembrance & Reconciliation: Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.โ€ and โ€œSitting Down to Take a Standโ€ Rosa Parks programs generated discussion on race in Maryland while commemorating Civil Rights Movement. In 2012 Maryland Humanities embarked on a strategic planning process that resulted in a new mission, reaffirming the organizationโ€™s commitment to lifelong learning in the humanities and its power to enrich our lives and communities.

Join us for a special evening of programming and a community conversation about the state of journalism and a free press in the United States.

The event will feature a keynote presentation and panel discussion examining who qualifies as the press, public trust in media and journalism, and what the future of a free press looks like in America. โ€œSpeaking Truth to Powerโ€ brings together a deeply experienced group of journalists to offer insight into this fundamental cornerstone of American democracy.

Our keynote and moderator for this conversation will be Terry Moran, an American independent journalist and former ABC News anchor and correspondent.

Our distinguished panelists for the evening will include Ian Cameron, Dr. Yanik Lamb, and Lisa Stark.

โ€ข Ian Cameron has more than thirty years of broadcast journalism experience, including twenty in senior news management at ABC News and the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation.

โ€ข Yanick Rice Lamb, Ph.D. is an award-winning journalist and tenured professor in the Department of Media, Journalism and Film in the Cathy Hughes School of Communications at Howard University.

โ€ข Lisa Stark was an award-winning network news correspondent who reported for ABC News, Al Jazeera America, and the PBS NewsHour.

This event is free and open to the public.

If youโ€™ve ever been in a room full of capable people and felt something was missing, youโ€™re not alone.

This lab is for leaders holding communities together through rapid change, high stakes, and growing tension. Youโ€™ll gain frameworks to open important conversations and create spaces where connection happens by design.

Join us for a Connection Design Lab. This lab is for people responsible for bringing fragmented groups together: facilitators, researchers, educators, community builders, and leaders of teams or movements. This is an experiential lab design where you'll get hands-on practice that grows your capacity for connection.

One Maryland One Book is coming to Montgomery College next Monday, October 26! ๐Ÿ“š

Lawrence Burney will be in discussion with Professor Stephen Bess, Associate Professor of English in the English and Reading Department, to deliver the Keynote for Montgomery Collegeโ€™s Humanities Days.

Did you know it's Banned Books Week? ๐Ÿ“š

Banned Books Week was launched in 1982 in response to a sudden surge in the number of challenges to books in libraries, bookstores, and schools.

This annual event highlights the value of free and open access to information and brings together the entire book community โ€” librarians, educators, authors, publishers, booksellers, and readers of all types โ€” in shared support of the freedom to seek and to express ideas.

The theme of this yearโ€™s event is Let Books Be โ€” Protect the Freedom to Read.
