Today, the Port of Baltimore community suffered a heartbreaking loss.

We extend our deepest condolences to the family, friends, and coworkers of the International Longshoremen's Association Local 333 member who was fatally injured during cargo operations at the Dundalk Marine Terminal.

The men and women of the ILA are an essential part of our maritime community, and today’s tragedy is felt across the Baltimore waterfront. Our thoughts are with everyone affected as they grieve this tremendous loss.

Please keep his loved ones and the entire ILA and Port of Baltimore community in your thoughts during this difficult time.

On this day in 1937, the Chesapeake Line steamship City of Baltimore caught fire near Seven Foot Knoll shortly before 8 p.m.

After the blaze was spotted from Gibson Island and reported to the Baltimore Fire Department, the fireboats Torrent and Sub Chaser No. 428 responded by water while ambulances and other resources responded by land.

A variety of nearby vessels also assisted, helping move passengers and crew away from the burning ship. Once evacuation efforts were underway, firefighting crews focused on trying to control the rapidly spreading fire using onboard equipment and water streams. Of the 93 people aboard, 38 passengers and 55 crew members, 89 survived. Four people ultimately lost their lives.

Nearly 90 years later, the mission remains the same. Baltimore’s fire boat crews continue to stand ready to protect lives and property on the water, no matter the conditions.

During this evening’s storms that moved across Baltimore, your BCFD Fire Boat crews stayed busy responding to multiple incidents.

Our first response was to a vessel in distress near Lazaretto Point. The mariner had been overtaken by the rapidly deteriorating weather and needed assistance getting to safety.

Our second response was to Inner Harbor Pier 5 after several port-a-potties were blown into the water by the high winds. Each was checked to ensure no one was inside.

Storms don’t stop emergencies on the water. Your BCFD Fire Boat crews remain the only 24/7/365 staffed public safety maritime response team on the entire Chesapeake Bay, standing ready to respond in all weather conditions.

Today our crew spent time servicing all of our issued DEWALT equipment. Every tool was cleaned, inspected, maintained, and marked with our unit-specific identifier to ensure it’s ready when we need it most.

Each Fire Boat tool is marked with three stripes: green, white, and red.

Think you know why we chose those colors, in that order? Drop your guess in the comments. We’ll reveal the answer tomorrow.
