NDW Commandant Rear Adm. Suzanne Bailey recently visited Naval Support Activity South Potomac on October 15.

During the visit, Rear Adm. Bailey toured quality-of-life facilities across Naval Support Facility (NSF) Dahlgren and met with key tenant command leaders at NSF Indian Head—including representatives from Naval Surface Warfare Center Indian Head Division and the Marine Corps Chemical Biological Incident Response Force.

Engagements like these underscore NDW’s ongoing dedication to mission readiness, tenant command collaboration, and the well-being of our service members and civilian workforce.

ICYMI: Navy Child and Youth Programs (CYP) has launched an enterprise-wide partnership with United Through Reading (UTR), a nonprofit that strengthens military families’ emotional bonds, literacy, and well-being through shared reading experiences, regardless of distance.

Under the banner “Read, Record, Connect: Keeping Military Families Connected Through Storytime,” the partnership will equip Navy installations with books, literacy resources, mobile story stations, and digital tools to help families stay connected during periods of separation while supporting children’s early literacy and development.

🎉 227 years of history at the Washington Navy Yard! ⚓

Established on Oct. 2, 1799, the Washington Navy Yard is the U.S. Navy’s oldest shore installation.

The Yard was established under the direction of Benjamin Stoddert, the nation’s first Secretary of the Navy, during President John Adams’ administration, with Commodore Thomas Tingey serving as its first commandant.

Originally established as a shipbuilding yard on land set aside by presidential order, the Washington Navy Yard has played an important role in our Navy’s history for more than two centuries.

💡 at its peak, the Navy Yard consisted of 188 buildings and employed nearly 25,000 people?

Today, the historic installation remains an important part of the Navy’s presence in the National Capital Region, continuing a legacy of service that began in 1799.

Happy anniversary, Washington Navy Yard! 🎂⚓
